SPOTLIGHT on Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Do you suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)?
Have you tried acupuncture?

[What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?]
IBS is a disorder of the gastrointestinal system. Sufferers usually have stomach cramps with painful constipation or diarrhea and in some unlucky cases, both. Other common symptoms include wind and bloating. These symptoms often appear after eating as well as during stressful times.

[What causes it?]
The exact cause of this disease is still unknown. However, from a western medicine perspective, it seems that people with IBS usually have very sensitive colons and they also tend to be quite emotional in mood. Stress seems to also play a part.
From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, IBS is believed to be caused by the infection of the gastrointestinal system by the pathogenic factors of dampness and heat. These factors are either obtained externally (such as weather) or generated internally (by improper food).

[How does acupuncture work?]
Acupuncture has been proven to be successful in alleviating the symptoms of IBS. Acupuncture works to remove dampness or heat from within the body’s system. This is done by inserting needles on certain acupoints located along the Stomach and Large Intestine body meridians. Treatment may also focus on those meridians related to stress and immunity as a further way to reduce the symptoms of IBS.

In addition to acupuncture, there are some basic things sufferers can do to help relieve the symptoms of IBS:

-Maintain a regular eating habit consisting of high fibre
-Refrain from heavy and large meals that are high in fat
-Drink at least eight glasses of water a day
-Avoid smoking
-Exercise regularly.

If you suffer from IBS and want to know more about how acupuncture might benefit you, please give me a call on 9221-2225.

“Massage for low-back pain”

This is a Cochrance review abstract and plain language summary, prepared and maintained by The Cochrance Collaboration.

One of the oldest forms of health care now has Cochrance evidence of benefit.

In the newly updated Cochrance review of massage for low back pain, there is now some evidence to show overall benefit.

New, high quality trials show that massage gives some relief from back pain that has continued for many weeks or months and the benefit may continue at least a year after the course of massage is over.

There is still not enough evidence about massage for acute back pain (back pain that started recently).

Massage was more likely to work when combined with exercises (usually stretching) and education.

The amount of benefit was more than that achieved by relaxation, self-care or acupuncture (although it may be less than the relief possible from manipulation or TENS machines).

However, more evidence is still needed on specific forms of massage.
There is a trend showing that the greatest benefit came with massage from trained massage therapists who had many years of experience, or licensed massage therapists.

It seems that acupressure or pressure point massage techniques provide more relief than classic (Swedish) massage, although more research is needed to confirm this.

Authors' conclusions:

Massage might be beneficial for patients with subacute and chronic non-specific low-back pain, especially when combined with exercises and education.

The evidence suggest that acupuncture massage(Shiatsu) is more effective than classic massage, but this need confirmation.

More studies are needed to confirm these conclusions and to assess the impact of massage on return-to-work, and to measure longer term effects to determine cost-effectiveness of massage as an intervention for low-back pain.
