    Hypnotherapy is a gentle therapy that allows the mind and body to communicate with each other in order to promote healing.

    To effect change we must be ready for it at a subconscious level.

    Many of us have tried a variety of things maybe to stop smoking or lose a few kilos or to stop worrying so much (reduce stress) and almost all of us have found ourselves falling back on our old ways. Then we are unkind to ourselves and beat ourselves up on the inside.

    The things we say to ourselves are so horrible and damaging that if we heard someone else saying them we would be outraged.

    But we continue to do it, minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year, decade by decade……

    You get the picture and it isn’t very pretty, but it is accurate!

    So pretty soon we feel lousy and unable to change because----

    Let me ask you a question-

    The answer is obvious and you deserve to use it….

    How long do you give a baby to learn how to walk????

    I’m going to guess that you said “as long as it needs or takes.”

    But you are not that kind to yourself-

    It is very rare that we do something once and succeed on the first try; most of us are human and go through a learning process.

    Stop Smoking:

    To stop smoking you need 3 sessions, 1 week apart:

    Session 1 entails getting ready to change and making the final decision to stop and after this session in a high number of cases you are a non smoker.

    Session 2 is all about building the confidence you need to continue with this new lifestyle and choice you have chosen.

    Session 3 is like putting the render in a brick wall it is there to make sure it lasts and weathers storms. The storms for us would equate to emotional issues and situations that need to confronted and defeated before we have to meet them head on in the real world.

    At this point in time in consultation with the client it will discussed and considered if other sessions may be appropriate or if other issues may need to be addressed.

    Weight Loss & Body Reshaping:

    Initially there is a need for 3 sessions, 1 week apart.

    Session 1 is about getting ready for change because that is what you are doing. Changing your life.
    Also in this session we identify if you want to be a certain weight or if what you really desire is a certain shape or feeling e.g. want to fit into a size 12 don’t care about the weight. Or must be 65kgs to be happy doesn’t matter if that is size 10, 12, 14 or 16.

    Session 2 we work on the cause of the eating or weight gain maybe it is emotional or perhaps you need referring to a nutritionist. What ever is the best for the client comes first.
    At this point we address any emotional issues that are associated with the problem and move to remove them. Always reinforcing the need for appropriate exercise and nutrition this is not a quick fix it is a life long change.

    Session 3 is about sticking with the choices and changes you have made and making sure they are workable for you to be able to use everyday. Also forgiveness is needed because we need to forgive ourselves for being out of control. At the time of emotional eating especially we did what we had to do, the only thing we could do to get through. Now we are able to face things and move on to a better way of life.

    My advice at this point would be 2 more sessions at 2 weeks apart and then once a month for support and confidence boosting for at least 3 more sessions. All of this is in consultation with the client however; you do need to commit to the first 3 sessions just to get you to a healthy, happy and easy place to lose weight, because for most people this has been a way of life for a long time.

    Phobias:

    Depending on the phobia 2 sessions is all that is required.

    Session 1 address and remove the phobia.

    Session 2 is to address any side issues that you were not aware of because of the phobia. It sometimes hides other problems or other aspects of the problem.

    The need or the lack of need for other sessions will also be discussed at this point and scheduled if necessary.

    Depression:

    Session 1 is all about relaxation and getting the client to a place where they are able to relax. The client will either attain a light trance or go hopefully to a medium level.

    With depression is all that is aimed for in the first session, and this actually allows the client to have a feeling of control to return to their lives. Because up until now everything is bigger or out of their control, part of the reason for the depression.

    Session 2 entails moving into trance and coming to terms with and identifying some of the underlying emotional issues, at a subconscious level.

    The client does not have to relive past experiences in a conscious state. The reason being that we are about to remove the emotional charge on the past experiences. This does not mean we remove the experience just the emotional feeling that goes with it so that it becomes more like remembering a movie than a personal experience.

    Session 3 is about finding any other experiences or charges that may affect the present and how the client responds them on a daily basis. At this point we will have chopped down some emotional trees and are well on the way to clearing the forest over the next couple of sessions.

    The need for these sessions is discussed and agreed upon by the client and practitioner for the benefit of the client. Everything is always in consultation with the client.

    Pain Relief:

    Interesting subject best explained by a brief example of an 18 year old client.

    I will never take pain away just for the sake of giving relief we must always find out the cause sometimes organic (the teeth in this example) and sometimes it will have an emotional reason and this needs to be addressed.

    He came with a sore mouth (originally he said a tooth ache), I asked if he could chose on a scale of 1-10 how sore, he said about 6 (medium sore) after some muscle testing we found it to be closer to 9 and he was acting brave because he was a young man.

    I refused to take the pain away completely because he needed to see a dentist. I did what we call dialing down the pain to a manageable level of 2.

    His second session he told me he had 4 impacted wisdom teeth that needed to come out immediately. He had booked in to have this done 4 days before Christmas. It was now a case of waiting for 2 more weeks. We kept the pain at this low level that was tolerable for the time up until the operation.

    At his last session before the operation we worked exclusively on his immunity system building it up and his healing ability as an automatic response. Also on the fact that the operation would go smoothly and with a minimum of blood loss so the doctor would have a very easy time and be able to see without a lot of blood to work through.

    At his last session in the early New Year he reported that he was operated on at 3 in the afternoon of the 21st of December and sat up and ate lunch with family on the 25th as usual for Christmas.

    The doctor was thrilled with his recovery and the client was happy, all he had was some panadol on the first day out of hospital then nothing.

    Anxiety:

    Session 1 is all about relaxing and identifying the feelings that are present when the client is anxious.

    Session 2 is about going to the feelings and initial situations that they occurred in and work on this area to remove the anxious/emotional connection that is continually reappearing and growing.

    Session 3 is about making sure that all of the events and emotions have been addressed this may involve going right back to childhood.

    A 4th session may be required but will only be scheduled after consultation with the client.

    Addictions:

    Session 1 is all about getting ready to change because addictions have been a part of your life for sometime if you are now acknowledging them and looking for help.

    Session 2 is going back to initial events surrounding the addictions and acknowledging them for what they are, coping strategies that no longer help you, they are now the problem.

    Session 3 is again going back and reinforcing with new ways of coping. This allows the client to bring good useful strategies to cope into their lives and get rid of the old.

    If more work is needed depending upon the clients concerns then they will be addressed and if further sessions are needed then they are scheduled.

    Stress Relief:

    Session 1 is all about relaxing and identifying the feelings that are present when the client is stressed. At this point we do a relaxation exercise similar to meditation that leads to a relaxed trance state to help relieve stressful feelings.

    Improve Academic Performance (Study Help):

    An example is perhaps the best way to illustrate this.

    A single group session was arranged for three teenage girls sitting for their year 10 finals; they were friends and wanted to be together.

    All 3 have a history of failing exams, they are very clever and can work extremely well with the practical side, but as soon as they have to sit exams they freeze up and fail. Their results did not show their true intelligence.

    They just had one session the day before the first exam.

    All three of them passed every exam for the first time in their high school life. Some of it was scraping through but in the subjects they liked the passed better than ever before.

    They all reported that they were able to think and not freeze up in the exam hall and this was a huge improvement for them because it meant they had a chance to write what they knew for a change.

    A single session is not ideal but it can be effective.

    My advice would be 4 sessions spaced out over the year, one for each term of school.

    It is all about taking the anxiety and fear away. Then the client is left with all the brain power for the real work of study. Do not under estimate it. It takes a lot of brain power and energy to fail and a lot less to pass.

    What I work on is removing the blockage and letting the person know that they are quite brilliant because we always underestimate how clever we really are. We know a lot more than we are consciously aware of and need the faith in ourselves to let it shine through.

    Gambling Problems:

    This has 2 main sources, it is either a learned behaviour perhaps in the home or the workplace or it is a coping mechanism that has been used to try to survive.

    Session 1 is to find out what is happening and relax a little, then forgive what has happened in the past because from here on in it is all about regaining life and control.

    Session 2 is about finding the actual root cause because it can be disguised under a lot of other problems or situations that seem to be the reason but are not really.

    Session 3 is to go really deep and put changes and coping mechanisms into place that will stand the test of time.

    It is now that it is appropriate to discuss what has happened and how life has changed and if there is any more need for extra sessions because sometimes some people need back up sessions at the rate of approximately once a month until they feel entirely confident with the changes they put into place.

    Because the real test is when the same old problem comes back and you return to the old way of coping. This is when you need the new coping skills and support. Some people never need this extra help, but it is there if you want it or need it.

    Sleeping Problems:

    Session 1 is about identifying the type of problem e.g. trouble getting to sleep, waking frequently, unable to return to sleep once woken or one of several others that can occur.
    At this session it is ideal to induce trance and just be able to feel relaxed and safe.

    Session 2 is about appraising the reason for the problem it maybe something emotional has caused this and once it has been addressed it can be let go.
    If not emotional it maybe necessary to refer to another professional if the case warrants this action, always the client’s health is the top priority.

    Session 3 by now you will have noticed that sleep has improved and along with this you will also notice that there is and improvement in other areas of your life. Energy levels are better and patience has improved or you will notice that you do not lose your temper as much or the best is when other people tell you how much better you look. All of this just from getting better rest.

    It is a great time to set up healthy goals that you will now want to achieve and this session is ideal to use for this purpose as well as supporting the changes that have taken place.

    Confidence & Motivation Building:

    Session 1 relaxation and confidence need to go hand in hand and this is where they meet. The only time you truly feel confident is when you also feel relaxed about what you are doing (relaxed not apathetic or lazy).

    Session 2 there is a lot of ego boosting and allowing you to feel confident, also worked in here is the opportunity to instill motivation to do new things in new ways or old things in new ways. This session will see you ready to make new choices (not do the same old thing but choose to do new things) confident that you are able to deal with what happens.

    Eager to do new things and motivated to try something new everyday no matter how small it is. Maybe as simple as choosing a different type of bread to make you sandwich with today.

    Session 3 sees you able to make choices, motivated and ready to try new things or even better to do the things that you need to do so that you are free to try new things.

    This session moves to a place where you are able to abandon all the old useless habits that have been in your way. Some of it may have an emotional content we remove what can only be called fear, because fear is what takes away from you ability to move forward.

    Session 4 is bringing all the newly formed habits together so that you no longer look at or think of things and fear them and put them off, this is where you say Bring It On and move forward confident and motivated to live an extraordinary life that you deserve.

    Sports Motivation & Improvement:

    With sports we know that a game is won or lost in our mind even before we take to the field. We play a kind of mental gymnastics with the game or sport that we play, and we play this continuously.

    What we do through hypnotherapy is we allow the client to see themselves win every time, this is done with language (NLP), visualization and remove emotions that charge our every thought about yourself and the others we may be playing with. By bringing the focus back to the client and only the client and removing all of the external static attached to negative thinking.

    An example is a basketballer; if he can throw a perfect 3 pointer once then he can do it every time. The only thing that changes is his/hers belief that they can do it every time.

    Once this barrier is overcome you see improvement on a daily or game by game basis that is astounding.

    Usually 4 sessions is recommended to work through the mindsets that are needed but it varies with each client.

    All sessions are designed for the client after an initial 10 minute phone interview. Please leave name and contact details when you call I do not interrupt sessions to answer the phone. I will call back so please make sure details are accurate.

    All examples that have been used are real clients and I have their permission to use their details.
