CHINESE MEDICINE
Chinese medicine has been used for thousands of years to treat a wide range of illness: physical and psychological, acute and chronic. In Chinese medicine theory all illness and disharmony within the body is caused by an imbalance of energy (Qi). The main aim of treatment is to approach this disharmony holistically so as to restore balance within the body. This is achieved through a number of traditional Chinese Medicine techniques including: acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping and Tui Na (Chinese Therapeutic Massage). These are explained below.
ACUPUNCTURE
During acupuncture appropriate points on the body are selected and needles are inserted to correct imbalances of energy. Points are selected according to both their physical location as well as their therapeutic actions so it is not uncommon to seek treatment for a sore back and receive acupuncture on the leg or arm as well.
Will I feel the needles?
The needles used in acupuncture are very fine and can barely be felt. The sensation felt by the client is usually described as dullness or tingling.
Is acupuncture safe?
Only sterile, single-use needles are ever used during practice at this clinic. Marlo is a registered acupuncturist and has been taught correct aseptic and safe techniques. She is committed to providing both a safe environment and the best possible care for her clients.
NEEDLE-FREE ACUPUNCTURE
A medical grade Australian manufactured electro-acupuncture machine is used for the administration of needle-free acupuncture. Needle-free acupuncture can be used for patients who prefer not to have needles and for young children.
Treatment is painless and non-invasive (the skin is not penetrated).
It is especially effective in relieving pain and sports related injuries.
MOXIBUSTION
Moxibustion involves the burning of the herb commonly known as Mugwort. Moxibustion is used to warm certain points on the body to treat cold related aliments. Most commonly a cigar-like stick of moxa is passed backwards and forwards over the skin at enough distance to give comfortable warmth.
CUPPING
Glass cups of various sizes are used for this treatment. A small flame is passed inside the cup then withdrawn to create a vacuum effect. The cup is then quickly placed onto the skin. A sucking sensation is felt as the vacuum draws the skin upwards. The sensation is not unpleasant and is often enjoyed for its ‘massaging’ feeling. Cupping is most commonly used on the back, in the treatment of muscular and joint pain as it disperses stagnation in these areas, but it can also be used to treat other conditions such as the common cold.
MASSAGE: TUI NA, REMEDIAL AND RELAXATION
TUI NA (Chinese Therapeutic Massage)
Tui Na is an holistic massage that is used to treat a wide range of complaints. It can be used to treat internal illness such as digestive complaints and insomnia, as well as musculoskeletal conditions. The massage is invigorating and highly effective in relieving muscular aches and tension.
No oils are used during Tui Na and removal of clothing is not necessary.
RELAXATION MASSAGE
Relaxation Massage is used to promote general relaxation, improve circulation and increase range of motion. The massage itself is a system of long gliding strokes, kneading and friction techniques used to manipulate the muscles, connective tissue and soft tissues of the body.
Relaxation Massage is most often used for stress release, rehabilitation or health maintenance.
Conditions such as stress, anxiety, back pain, fibromyalgia, tension headaches, depression, arthritis, poor circulation, insomnia, irritable bowel syndrome and menstrual cramps can be alliviated with this massage.
The use of essential oils blended with massage oil can provide the added benefit of aromatherapy to the treatment.
REMEDIAL MASSAGE
Remedial massage is used for the treatment of specific muscular dysfunctions and addresses both the cause of the disorder as well as the symptoms.
Benefits include an increase of blood flow to the muscles allowing removal of toxins, the calming of the peripheral nervous system to ease pain and discomfort; relaxation of muscles to improve joint mobility and the easing of stiffness and tension.
