What is massage? Why massage?
Massage is one of the world’s oldest therapies for treating human ills. It is the systematic manipulation of soft tissues, Mainly the muscles. It benefits circulatory, muscular & nervous systems.
Massage is an excellent method for reducing stress, inducing relaxation, as well as energising the system. It can help maintain good health. Since reducing stress improves the immune system, the use of touch is so powerful, evoking natural human reactions that calm the body both physically & mentally.
How will remedial massage help?
Remedial massage is used to assist the body in healing and remedy tissue disfunction. It combines kneading movements with acupressure to treat specific trouble spots responsible for chronic pain, repetitive strain injury, digestive problems, PMT, headaches, migraines, muscles in trauma (i.e. bad backs), stress, anxiety, fatigue, posture, muscle tone, energy, circulation and lymphatic drainage to encourage the disposal of waste from muscles and helps to reduce swelling and improve range of movement . Various techniques are used to help to assist the body, i.e. trigger point therapy, cross fibre friction, deep tissue massage, lymphatic drainage, myofascial release, reflexology, compression & craniosacral therapy.
Sports massage is used to boost performance to aid athletes in training both before and after a competition or workout for muscle flexibility & circulation which help the muscles to prepare for the forthcoming task and activity thus reducing the risk of injury. It is also used for rehabilitation purposes for chronically injured or recently injured athletes. Many professional athletes and their team doctors now consider regular massage as part of their training regime.
Do doctors often prescribe massage?
A growing number of doctors are now prescribing massage over the last few years. There has been a wider acceptance by doctors especially for the treatment of neck and back problems and chest massage to loosen bronchial secretions in patients with asthma & chronic bronchitis. Many physiotherapists, chiropractors & osteopaths now refer patients for massage. Some health funds provide rebates for remedial massage.
What can you expect from the treatment?
Increased range of movement, improved energy & circulation, injury management and prevention, reduced pain and better mechanics. Regular massage sessions at least once a week can promote long-lasting muscle relaxation and general reduction in fatigue & may reduce chronic conditions.
Reactions
It is not uncommon to have shifting of muscular skeletal discomfort, tiredness & headaches if the body is dehydrated. This generally lasts for 24-36 hours. It is vitally important to drink plenty of water both pre and post treatment to reduce the intensity of reactions following treatments. For maximum benefit it is important that you relax and do just gentle exercise and have light meals. Do not over exert yourself after treatment.
