CHIROPRACTIC PHILOSOPHY
What is health?
Many people believe that if you feel well you must be well, but there’s much, much more to health than just being pain free.
How do we stay healthy?
The main interest of chiropractors is a properly functioning nervous system. The part of your nerve system that is most easily damaged by stress or trauma is the spinal cord and the nerve roots that exit from between each spinal bone. Because of the way your spine and nerve system are designed, improper motion or position of spinal bones can cause nerve system interference from pinching, rubbing, stretching or irritation of nerve tissue. That is why when you go to a chiropractor he will work primarily with the spine, in order to help remove interferences that may be impairing normal health. You should not wait for symptoms to present themselves before seeing a chiropractor.
What is chiropractic?
Chiropractic philosophy recognizes that only the power that creates the body can heal the body – provided there is no interference. The purpose of chiropractic is to help the body do its job.
Chiropractic is a natural and gentle approach to health – it restores life and motion.
What do chiropractors do?
Chiropractors are the only health care providers who specialize in detection, correction and prevention of vertebral subluxation complex. They locate vertebral subluxations which are causing nerve system interferences usually along the spine and correct them, relieving pain and improving health. They don’t treat disease and conditions, they detect, reduce and prevent vertebral subluxation complex.
What is subluxation?
A subluxation occurs when one or more spinal joints or bones are out of alignment with the ones above or below. This results in nerve pressure and interference of the nerve impulse between the body and the brain.
What is vertebral subluxation complex?
Vertebral subluxation complex describes what happens when spinal bones lose their normal position and motion. It also explains the resulting nerve interference, abnormal muscle function, soft tissue damage and degeneration that occurs.
What causes subluxation?
There are many common causes such as physical trauma such as improper lifting, car accidents, repetitive motions, poor sleeping habits, even giving birth. Emotional stress, mental tension and chemical imbalance can also cause subluxations.
How do you know if you have a subluxation?
Most clients are in pain or discomfort, it is a common symptom of subluxations. There could also be a reduction or loss in mobility, swelling or tenderness. Muscle spasm, tingling sensations, weakness, dizziness, stiffness, loss of control over muscles or organs are all warning signs that something is wrong. Often it is difficult to notice these warning signals, as the results of some vertebral subluxations are almost invisible. A decreased flow of energy may go unnoticed for months or years, just because we feel well doesn’t necessarily mean that we are well - interference to the nerve system could be occurring and causing damage. Most subluxations cause NO SYMPTOMS AT ALL.
What is an adjustment?
An adjustment is given when the doctor of chiropractic uses a carefully directed and controlled pressure in a precise direction to a joint that is subluxated releasing nerve pressure.
What does an adjustment feel like?
Chiropractic adjustments feel good and are often accompanied by feelings of relief and a pleasant feeling of well being. Adjustments are gentle and quite relaxing.
Does it hurt?
Generally no, there is no discomfort at all, in fact many clients find adjustments relaxing, enjoyable and look forward to thier visits.
How is an adjustment given?
There are hundreds of ways to give an adjustment, all of them involve the use of carefully directed and measured pressure. Adjustments can be quick thrusts or in other instances slow constant pressure. Sometimes only one area of the spine is adjusted, at other times the entire spine will receive attention. Chiropractic adjustable tables and
small hand held instruments also allow the chiropractor to direct or reduce the adjusting force, and sometimes the clients body weight is used.
What technique do you use?
That depends on the Doctor’s findings. Tom Dawson is skilled in a number of different techniques and is able to use whichever one is most appropriate for you. What do you prefer?
eg: SOT, Activator etc
What is the popping noise you sometimes hear?
Sometimes you’ll hear a faint clicking or popping sound, other times you won’t. This indicates that the joint has separated slightly and released some normal fluids and gases in the joint. This has little meaning and varies with each client and each adjustment.
