Hypnotherapy - What's it all mean?

Firstly hypnotherapy is an exciting realm to explore. Continually astounding both traditional and alternative healers, it's applications for therapeutic benefit are almost endless.

In hypnosis we are working with the unconscious mind. Historically, the mind is thought of in terms of the conscious and the unconscious. Usually the conscious mind is credited as the power broker - and this is understandable. The conscious mind is where we spend most of our waking life, it's responsible for all our conscious decisions...the Big Decisions: should i take that job? is he/she The One? should i buy that house. These are Big Questions in terms of ego. However, the REALLY BIG STUFF: respiration, heart beat, blood pressure, digestion, metabolism and the flight or flight response plus a host of other 'instinctive' behaviours are governed by the unconscious mind and the autonomic nervous system.

Most of our unwanted habits are unconscious. People often say 'and suddenly i have a cigarette in my hand' or 'i want to lose weight but somehow i just end up not visiting the gym'. these unconscious behaviours are governed - understandably - by the unconscious mind. once we have access to this state of mind, we can begin to structure much more desired or constructive behaviours and results.

Many people who utilise hypnosis are astounded at the speed and efficacy with which it works. Hypnosis is currently recognised by both the Australian Medical AND Dental Associations with the practice of hypnosis becoming more and more popular as more and more people are exposed to it. Hypnosis is well-established and has a respected track record.

Hypnosis - So you want the truth?

Check in here regularly for updates on the amazing world of hypnosis.

Truth I:
Dr Gerard Sunnen of the new york university school of medicine calls hypnosis 'the most potent nonpharmocological realxing agent known to science' he will presrcribe hypnosis before prescribing a tranquiliser!

Truth II:
The best hypnotic subjects are not unintelligent or 'weak-minded' people. in fact, the more strong-willed, intelligent and imaginative you are, the better hypnotic subject you will probably be.

Truth III:
The best hypnotic subjects are not unintelligent or 'weak-minded' people. in fact, the more strong-willed, intelligent and imaginative you are, the better hypnotic subject you will probably be.

Truth IV:
Many people claim to have never been in a hypnotic state. hypnosis is a very natural, spontaneous experience. if you have ever lost yourself in a book or movie, arrived at your destination with no recall of driving there...then you have experienced a hypnotic state.

Truth V:
Whilst in hypnosis you are in complete control of all your actions. you cannot be made to do anything you do not want to do.

What happens in a hypnotherapy session?

Initially your hypnotherapist will ask you some questions relating to the reason for your visit. This may even include some questions that may not seem relevant to you. But the more you can personalise this exercise the better. Use words that really represent the essence of the 'problem' for you. For example, one woman i saw mentioned that she didn't like biting her fingernails because they looked 'yukky' when bitten. When her words were fed back to her in hypnosis they carry extra weight. So go, really get into your experience.

This is usually followed by what's called 'the induction': this consists of the hypnotherapist guiding you towards a hypnotic state. The entire session is paced at a rate determined by you. This may then be followed by some relaxation-type guidance and then the hypnotic suggestions to assist you in achieving your agreed desire goals.

There is a common denominator to almost all hypnotic experience and that is that people report feeling refreshed, relaxed and at peace when they conclude their session in hypnosis.

'Having been a nail biter for as long as I can remember, I decided it was time to take action!

I have tried everything; nail varnish, tape, concentration, the yukky tasting stuff... but nothing worked.

Dave made me feel very comfortable and talked me through exactly what would happen during the hypnosis session.

It's now been a month... and my nails look great!'

'Hypnosis with dave flicked my smoking switch to 'off' - permanently! i feel protected from myself and have seen the improvements straightaway, physically, mentally and financially. all this in one relaxed and informal visit.'
