    What to expect...

When you first come and see Teja or Jacinda, the consultation will take around 1 - 1.5 hours, including treatment. Firstly, you will be asked some questions about your main health concerns, as well as some general questions that may seem to be irrelevant to your condition. However, TCM works wholistically, and it is important not to miss anything. After asking these questions, they will look at your tongue and feel your pulse (at the radial artery of both wrists), these techniques will help with your diagnosis, and influence the choice and combination of points and herbs. Sometimes it may be necessary for further palpation, especially along specific areas on your back. Once satisfied with a diagnosis, treatment will start, which usually consists of acupuncture (unless you are terribly needle-phobic, and then acupressure can be used). Sometimes other techniques will be needed, such as cupping, gua sha, moxibustion and/or tui na massage. If your condition requires herbs, Teja and Jacinda can prescribe powders, capsules or pills. If desired, raw herbs can be prescribed, but these are not stocked. Subsequent consultations will take around 1 hour. Top of page...

    Acupuncture

This is one of the oldest forms of therapy, dating back as far as 2000 years ago in China. Very fine needles are inserted into special points along energy pathways to unblock, rebalance and tonify the body's Qi. Teja uses single-use sterile needles, and employs a gental needling technique.

Kids get the very smallest and finest needles. Two or three unilateral points are chosen, and they only go in for a couple of seconds, then come out again (and then they get a lolly!). For adults, the needles are approximately 0.22mm thin (some are 0.18mm thin and the thickest are 0.25mm thin), and will stay in place between 10 and 30 minutes. Sometimes you may need a treatment on your front, then another one on your back. Top of page...

    Paediatric Acupuncture

Jacinda is a Paediatric specialist (along with obstetrics). Paediatric acupuncture is very different to adult acupuncture as tiny little needles are used, and the techniques are over quickly. Children respond to acupuncture and herbs rapidly, as their young systems are so responsive. Please contact Jacinda on 0432 248 128, or email her at jacinda@pointspecifics.com for more information, or read more at www.pointspecifics.com Top of page...

    Chinese Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine and Acupuncture are the root components of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). When used together one sees results much quicker then when used in isolation. With a dispensary of 300 medicinals, Teja and Jacinda use granulated and powdered herbs that have been researched and tested for safety and efficiency. Using granules and powders instead of raw herbs means that you can take your medicine quickly and easily, without having to boil a big bag of twigs and leaves. Top of page...

    Tuina massage

This is a special form of Chinese massage that uses acupressure points and meridian pathways to relieve stagnation and move deep blockages in the system. Various oils and liniments are usually used to help with the treatment. Top of page...

    Cupping

Chinese medicine also uses the method of 'cupping' to combat disease. Effectively a massage in reverse, cupping pulls the muscle fibres upward (as opposed to pushing down during massage) and frees stagnant blood in the muscles. This therapy gives a great feeling of relief from muscular tension, especially in the upper back. There can be some bruising afterwards, but this is a GOOD sign and will disappear after a few days. Commonly, oils will be used first, then after the cupping, a Chinese herbal liniment is used on the area. In some cases heat packs will be used after the liniment is applied, to strongly mobilise circulation. Top of page...

    Gua Sha

Similar in a way to massage, gua sha therapy involves the use of a Chinese soup spoon, which is rubbed with massage oil over various muscles and energy pathways, revealing areas of stagnation. These treatments will usually include the use of oils, liniments and heat as described above. Top of page...

    Moxibustion

The use of warmth and heat to heal the body. Moxibustion uses the herb Mugwort, which is rolled into a stick or made into a fine wool, to activate and energise certain points on the body. It is strongly tonifying and warming, activating blood flow and stimulating the body's 'Yang Qi'. Top of page...

    Ear Candling

Specially designed hollow candles are used in each ear to clear wax, remove blockages and assist in middle ear infections. Also great for kids. Top of page...

    Diet therapy

Chinese diet therapy involves a balance of flavours and natures of food. It is very important to support the digestive system with warm and nourishing foods, and not to over-indulge in fatty, sweet or cold substances. Teja and Jacinda will can discuss your current diet and possible changes you could make to ensure a quick recovery from your condition. Various vitamins and mineral supplements, which combine well with Chinese herbs, are also available. Top of page...

    Doula

Jacinda is a doula, which is a specialised woman who supports other women through the lead up to labour, throughout childbirth and afterwards. A doula provides continuity of care from the beginning of labour through to the end. She is on call 2 weeks before and after the woman's due date. She meets with the pregnant woman and often her partner during her pregnancy to form a strong relationship, she will come to the woman's home or the hospital when the labouring woman decides it is time for more support and she will make postnatal visits to ensure everything is going smoothly, as well as do any odd jobs that desperately need doing!

Please contact Jacinda for more information on 0432 248 128, or read more at the Point Specifics website.

    Tai Qi & Qi Gong

Both of these Oriental forms of movement are designed to cultivate one's internal energies, gently stretch and mobilise the body, and both are a great form of exercise. Tai Qi is an 'internal' marital art, meaning all the movements, while slow and controlled, are based on self-defence. Qi Gong is more stationary than Tai Qi, and its movements open up and stretch out all the channels of energy in the body. Breathing is an important part of learning these art forms. They are a great form of stress-relief and relaxation. Private tuition is available for individuals or groups of up to five, please see prices section below. Teja also runs a Tai Qi and Qi Gong class on Friday nights from 7.30pm - 8.30pm at the Kung Fu Academy in Castle Hill. Please call Teja on 0402 618 805 for more information. You could also visit the academy's website. Top of page...

    Commonly treated conditions:

The beauty of Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is that you do not need to have a Western medical diagnosis in order to have treatment, nor do you necessarily have to be sick! In fact, in ancient China, wealthy families would often employ TCM doctors to keep each family member healthy – when such member would fall ill, the TCM doctor would not be paid until he had successfully treated the illness. Below is a limited list of various groups of complaints/systems that are commonly treated by TCM, for a more detailed analysis please visit www.pointspecifics.com Top of page...

Besides disease prevention, TCM can treat:

    Sore muscles and joints

    Digestive complaints

    Fertility and reproductive issues

    Gynaecological disorders

    Psychological and emotional instability

    Paediatric disorders

    Sleep disorders

    Urogenital complaints

    Sexual dysfunction

    Neurological disorders

    Skin and hair conditions

    Respiratory conditions

    Cardiovascular diseases

    And finally....

Some disease conditions, such as Cystic Fibrosis, affect many of the above body systems, such as digestive and respiratory. Diabetes is another example, with complications in almost all of the above categories. Yet another is Multiple Sclerosis, and the list could go on and on. As TCM takes a wholistic approach to each case, it is particularly useful in the management of these types of illnesses. Top of page...

    About Teja & Jacinda...

Teja & Jacinda completed their degrees in TCM at the University of Technology, Sydney. Along with this, Teja studied a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies, with Chinese language and culture as his major. Therefore, he and Jacinda lived, worked and studied in Kunming, capital city of Yunnan Province in the PRC for 12 months.

Teja's passion for Chinese medicine arose out of his explorations into the Chinese martial art; Kung Fu. After obtaining his Black Sash in 1997 and instructing for several years at the Kung Fu Academy, Teja travelled to China to visit Gong Fu academies on the mainland. Whilst abroad, he became very ill and saw first-hand how the Chinese medical system worked. Although lacking in areas, the combination of Chinese and Western medicine in the public hospitals inspired Teja to immerse himself into the Oriental medical art form.

Chinese medicine has always been a part of Jacinda's life, with strong cultural and family links to China. As a child in particular, every and any sickness or ailment was treated with acupuncture and Chinese herbs. After her studies Jacinda lived in China for a year with Teja and furthered her knowledge. Her passion for paediatrics stem from an understanding that when you treat children, you are dealing with things early to prevent things worsening in the future. Children respond quickly to Chinese medicine, and it is something they boast about to their friends... 'i had an acupuncture needle here in my arm!'. There is an understandable fear amongst parents, not wanting to put their kids through pain, and the very thought of needles... However, once they see how the treatment is done, and see the results for themselves, they quickly become converts to Chinese medicine. The needles only go in a few millimetres, and they only stay in for a couple of seconds... and that's it. It's over almost before it began. The lengthy process is in the diagnosis and the discussion of the child's health. Obstetric health is just a step before paediatrics, and not only focuses on the unborn child, but also on the mother, who can suffer during pregnancy and after. Jacinda sees women right from the first trimester through to labour.

Currently, Teja practices Chinese Medicine in Dural, and instructs Kung Fu, Tai Qi and Qi Gong in Castle Hill. Jacinda also practices from Dural, specialising in kids and pregnant women.

Soon, the Point Specifics clinic will be moving to Kellyville.
