It's a family affair at the Herbal Medicine Clinic in Woden, Canberra!
5 year old Felicity sits quite still, fascinated, at what I’m going to find while completing an iris diagnosis with her. Even ‘wriggle about’ little Christopher gives me a peek at his eyes! It’s ofcourse much easier with adults and older children, like 10 year old Lisa, pictured here. Generally, I see more women than men but there is the odd male that comes in (usually dragged in by his spouse or Mum). But that’s okay, we welcome everybody at the Clinic!!
Your first appointment
Your first consultation will involve a thorough discussion into your health concerns, medical history and diet, with the added benefit of iridology to assist in diagnosis.
A tailor-made health programme, to suit your individual needs, usually includes an herbal medicine therapeutic mix with appropriate Bach Flower Remedies, and recommendations on lifestyle and dietary changes that may benefit you. Nutritional supplements may also be recommended.
Appointments take one hour and cost $80.00.
The herbal ‘drops’ cost $15.00. First appointment therefore $95.00. Please allow one and a half hour. Follow up appointments 1 hour and $80. Recommended supplements optional.

Iridology
The iris, which is the coloured wheel of the eye, is examined using an iris torch which magnifies the details of the iris, and enables a skilled practitioner to examine and report on particular aspects of the patient's condition. It is non-invasive, simple and effective. Every part of your body is related to a section of the iris, so your eyes can help pinpoint problems and imbalances.
The iris reveals bodily conditions as they relate to inherent physical weaknesses and levels of health in a person. This empowers us to take more control of our health through simple, easy to implement lifestyle changes that will make a significant impact on our health. It assists in evaluating specific dietary and lifestyle changes we may wish to make a personal reading provides guidelines which can be immediately implemented.
Herbal Medicine
Herbal Medicine is a system of medicine that exclusively uses plants to safely and effectively heal disease and assist in the maintenance of good health. It is the oldest form of medicine on our planet and is still used today by over 75% of the world’s population as the primary form of medicine. All over the world, people have used plants, not only as food, but also as medicines. Traditional knowledge of herbal remedies used to be passed from generation to generation, but nowadays this is rare.
Herbs, like people, are complex and have variable organic structures. Each plant contains many different constituents which together give a unique taste and range of actions. Particularly active constituents have been isolated and copied by pharmacists to produce medicines such as aspirin. However, using the whole plant has a much more subtle effect, and generates far fewer side effects, if any at all. Herbalists therefore prefer to use the whole plant to treat the whole person. We are all unique and react to life in different ways; just as we all have special preferences for various foods, each of us responds best to particular herbs.
Plants and herbs are used worldwide for their therapeutic value. They work on specific systems in the body.
There are many uses for herbs – cleansing, toning, supporting, eliminating, stimulating, calming and healing.
Since the inception of The Therapeutic Goods Act and its subsequent enactment by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), the quality control and production of herbal medicines are subjected to the highest standards in the world.
Ear candling
Many people suffer from blocked ears, constantly ringing ears or glue ear. Many of our children complain of swimmers ear, leading to headaches, feeling like there is water trapped. The solution can be as simple as an Ear Candling treatment.
Clients have described it as feeling ‘lighter’ and cleaner in the ears, nose and throat. Their benefits reported have been less ear ache, ringing in the ears, improvement with allergies and sinus infections. Some have noticed they suffer less with a sore throat. Adults are amazed at the build up of excess wax over the years and the tremendous relief and comfort ear candling can give sometimes with only one treatment.
For Hundreds of years the American Hopi Indian tribes used the gentle art of ear candling, known today as "Thermotherapy" to cleanse the ears.
The basic technique involves the use of a hollow candle, which looks like a thick straw. The candle is saturated in 100 per cent Bees Wax and contains a special blend of Herbs which release a gentle vapour when the candle is lit to soothe and calm the ear and arrest any infection that may be harbouring inside the ear.
The candle is lit at one end and the other end is gently placed at the very opening of the ear. The flame at the top of the candle creates a vacuum, which gently encourages the excess wax in the ear to come away and work its way up the candle so there is no mess and no risk to the client. The body will release only old dirty wax and will quickly replace it with clean wax that is a honey colour and much more pleasant.
The ear candle technique is ideal for removing decayed and polluted wax which can have fungal infections lodged inside the Auditory Canal (cases have been reported where insects have been found in the hardened wax) and Candida (Yeast infection).
Children are especially susceptible to ear infections because the inside of the Auditory Canal slants horizontal unlike adults which slant vertical and don't attract bacteria as often.
Ear candling is extremely relaxing and toddlers often look forward to a treatment as it gives them instant relief from the symptoms of congestion, earache and discomfort that accompanies teething, colds and flu.
Adults are amazed at the build up of excess wax over the years and the tremendous relief and comfort ear candling can give with only one treatment.
Ear candling is recommended especially for the symptoms of: Sinus, Glue Ear, Hearing Difficulties, Allergies, Ear Ache, Tinnitus (Ringing), Headache, Sore Throats, Swimmers Ear Stress, Anxiety and Depression. May also help to relieve pressure after flying, deep sea diving or whenever an imbalance of presure has occured i.e. caused by altitude, the consequences of cold, headphones, telephones, etc. May also help to relax and calm, relieving symptoms of stress and anxiety.
An ear candling session takes ab1 hour and costs $40.00. However, if you've had an herbal medicine appointment and have a follow up appointment you receive this for free.

Not all styles are created equal
Different types of massage are better at achieving certain outcomes. The most requested form of massage is apparently Relaxation massage. This is a light style of Swedish massage which forms the basis of Remedial, Sports & deep tissue massages (these tend to be quite painful). It is a rhythmical massage that soothes and relaxes the body and makes you feel wonderful. This style has a sedative effect on the nervous system, helps muscle tone and helps prevent atrophy from forced inactivity due to illness. Energy levels noticeable increase.
The focus is on a gentle but firm massage that is comforting and energizing to the body.
Cellulite is an accumulation of water and toxic wastes in the connective tissue surrounding the fat cells. The tissue around the fat cells tends to harden, imprisoning the water and causing unsightly bulges. Possible causes can be a hormonal imbalance, poor circulation, unbalanced diet, abuse of tea & coffee, cigarettes or alcohol or stress. In conjunction with a weight management programme this style of massage using healing essential oils is an effective method of improving lymph drainage and ridding the body of unsightly cellulite.
So, with this in mind – consider experiencing the bliss of a massage and invest in your health and wellbeing.
****WATER ****WATER****How much do you need a day?****WATER****WATER*** Water is an important structural component of skin cartilage, tissues and organs. For human beings, every part of the body is dependent on water. Our body comprises about 75% water: the brain has 85%, blood is 90%, muscles are 75%, kidney is 82% and bones are 22% water. The functions of our glands and organs will eventually deteriorate if they are not nourished with good, clean water.
The average adult loses about 2.5 litres water daily through perspiration, breathing and elimination. Symptoms of the body's deterioration begins to appear when the body loses 5% of its total water volume. In a healthy adult, this is seen as fatigue and general discomfort, whereas for an infant, it can be dehydrating. In an elderly person, a 5% water loss causes the body chemistry to become abnormal, especially if the percentage of electrolytes is overbalanced with sodium. One can usually see symptoms of aging, such as wrinkles, lethargy and even disorientation. Continuous water loss over time will speed up aging as well as increase risks of diseases.
If your body is not sufficiently hydrated, the cells will draw water from your bloodstream, which will make your heart work harder. At the same time, the kidneys cannot purify blood effectively. When this happens, some of the kidney's workload is passed on to the liver and other organs, which may cause them to be severely stressed. Additionally, you may develop a number of minor health conditions such as constipation, dry and itchy skin, acne, nosebleeds, urinary tract infection, coughs, sneezing, sinus pressure, and headaches.
So, how much water is enough for you? The minimum amount of water you need depends on your body weight. A more accurate calculation, is to drink an ounce of water for every two pounds of body weight.
Here's an easy calculation for your minimum water needs per day -
1 litre for every 25 kgs you weigh. Eg: 68 kgs = 2.7 litres
Are you struggling to lose weight? Blaming a sluggish metabolism? Not sure what you can even do about it? Let’s look at metabolism and how it affects weight loss.
What is Metabolism?
Metabolism is a complex web of hormones and enzymes that convert food to energy and also determine how efficiently your body does it. The process of metabolism therefore determines the rate at which we burn calories and consequently how quickly we lose or gain weight.
But what about my Metabolism?
I am glad you asked. Not everyone's metabolism burns calories at the same rate.
Your metabolism varies based on your:
age, it slows naturally by about 5% per decade after 40 years of age
gender, men generally burn more calories than women even at rest
lean body mass, the greater the proportion of muscle you have, the faster your metabolism tends to be
heredity, some people just burn calories faster than others
thyroid gland, occasionally someone will have a defect in the thyroid gland which slows their metabolism but this is very rare, much rarer in fact than many would claim
body weight, the more weight you carry around means that the body has to work harder even at rest and therefore your metabolism tends to run faster
What's the best way to kick start my metabolism?
Now that we know a little about what affects the rate our metabolism burns calories, we can start to look at what we can do to increase our metabolism and therefore improve weight loss.
There are some factors that affect metabolism which we can't change such as age, sex and heredity. The others we can work with to stack the metabolic odds in our favour.
Exercise
Probably one of the best ways to increase our metabolism is to exercise, cardiovascular exercise to burn calories in the short term (easiest way to start this is to go for a brisk walk regularly) and resistance training to build lean body mass and burn more calories in the long term. Every kilogram of muscle in your body burns about 77 calories a day, whereas each kilogram of fat burns about 4.4 calories, it doesn't take a genius to work out which one is better for weight loss.
Eat more
Just what every dieter wants to hear but is desperately trying not to do. The trick is not to eat more in quantity, but to eat more often. Small but frequent meals help to keep your metabolism burning at full steam, which means you'll burn more calories overall.
When you eat infrequently, and have too many hours between meals your metabolism actually slows down, it goes into starvation mode. When this happens the body holds onto every calorie that it can by shutting itself down partially. Snacking between meals also helps reduce the amount that you eat at your major meals. Proteins generally also require about 25% more energy to digest therefore it is generally better to snack on low-fat high protein snacks between meals.
Professional help
Sometimes the simple and effective methods mentioned above don’t work. A qualified Herbalist has organic herbal remedies available to ‘switch’ the metabolism on again.
So, with this in mind - your best methods of maintaining a high metabolism to lose weight are to exercise regularly, lose fat and build muscle, and smaller meals more frequently including low-fat high protein snacks between the major meals. Seek professional help if required.
