WHAT IS THE BOWEN TECHNIQUE?

It is a remarkable and unique remedial therapy which is non-intrusive, gentle and very effective.

Through a series of gentle moves over muscles and other soft tissue at specific points on the body, it stimulates energy flow that releases stresses, strains and blockages and empowers the body’s own resources to naturally rebalance, repair and heal itself.

There is no forceful manipulation, no massage and no rapid, forceful adjustments.

It is very relaxing, very gentle and safe for all ages, from babies to the elderly.

It is holistic in that it treats the whole person, every organ, every system, every part of the body and not just the condition causing the problem. Healing occurs as needed: physical, mental, energetic, chemical, emotional etc., allowing the body to re-orient to an original “blueprint”.

People are often surprised at how gentle Bowen Therapy is, especially those who are used to other types of treatment such as physiotherapy, chiropractic and massage. It is not the pressure but the technique which produces such amazing results and this is why it is so effective in treating even tiny babies and the elderly.

WHAT IS INVOLVED IN A TREATMENT?

A Bowen Therapy session usually takes from between 45mins to one hour. The first session will take a little longer however, as it will include a consultation to give me the details and history of your condition and any other health-related issues. I will also ask you to complete a form outlining your past medical history, medications, operations etc. Depending on what your problems are, there may be an assessment of the range of movement in eg your neck, arms, shoulders etc. Following this, I will work out the most appropriate procedure for the session.

The treatment is usually carried out while you lie comfortably on a massage table, initially face down and then later, face up. If you have any problems with this position you can be made more comfortable with pillows or it may be more comfortable and appropriate for you to be treated seated in a chair, depending on your condition. The most important thing is that you are comfortable and at ease.

The treatment can be given through light clothing if preferred, although it is more effective if the moves are made directly on the skin in which case a light blanket or towels are used, exposing only the area where the moves are being made.

In a treatment I use fingers and thumbs to make light rolling-type moves on precise points across soft tissue- muscles, ligaments and tendons etc. After two or three moves, I will move away for approximately two minutes, allowing your body to respond to and integrate the moves just performed and then I will continue with another set of moves followed by another rest period and so on until the treatment is completed.

Although the moves are light and gentle, they have a powerful effect and can provide help for a whole range of conditions.

You will find the treatment deeply relaxing; in fact many report that it is THE most relaxing therapy they have ever received.

WHAT WILL I FEEL DURING A TREATMENT?

The Bowen moves actually communicate through the nervous system in ways that encourage the body to subtly rebalance and realign itself.

The most noticeable feeling you will probably experience is one of complete and deep relaxation. It is not uncommon for clients to actually fall asleep during a session. You may experience other sensations such as a tingling feeling, heat, cold or a twinge. These sensations are all quite normal and positive as they indicate that shifts are occurring as the body begins to realign and rebalance itself.

WHAT ABOUT AFTER A TREATMENT?

Many begin to feel wonderfully relaxed immediately afterwards, and during the next week or so, may become aware that other positive changes are occurring. This is because Bowen Therapy continues to respond for some time after the treatment. I will also advise you not to have any other form of manipulative therapy eg massage, acupuncture, physiotherapy, chiropractic etc for up to four days before, or five days after undergoing Bowen treatments otherwise its effectiveness may be lessened.

Another amazing thing about Bowen is that often conditions a client may have forgotten to mention to the practitioner, also begin to improve. This is because the body has an inbuilt healing mechanism, knowing what to deal with and in what order. (See Elaine’s testimonial below)

I will ask too, after a treatment, that you increase your water intake for a few days. This is to assist your body to heal more effectively by helping to flush out unwanted toxins that may have built up in the tissues but subsequently released following a treatment.

I will also ask that for the remainder of the day following your treatment you get up and walk around after every 30 minutes or so. This assists the body to re-balance and re-align itself.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE NECESSARY?

With the exception of long-standing chronic conditions, a series of 3 to 6 treatments a week apart is the usual course of action, with follow-up to assess if further treatments are required.

Of course there are no guarantees, but benefits may be seen after the first session.

Even conditions of a long-standing nature can often resolve in 3-4 sessions. The number of treatments required is variable as some conditions and some people may take longer to respond. It depends largely on the individual’s capacity to heal and this varies.

For a chronic or long-standing condition I will usually recommend booking a series of 3 treatments spaced a week apart, after which I can assess the progress.

Many find great benefit by returning for regular maintenance treatments every 2-3 months. These are recommended as a preventative measure, to maintain balance and well-being., to improve posture and to ensure that the benefits obtained from the initial treatment/s are continued.

WHEN SHOULD I COME FOR THERAPY?

If other forms of therapy haven’t been helping you or only give you relief for a short time. Often we find that people have virtually given up on other therapies and have been carrying around aches and pains for many years. Do give Bowen a try as sometimes even long-standing problems can be resolved or relieved after only a few treatments, even after just one treatment in some cases. Most people respond very quickly to Bowen.

If you have an injury, in which case the sooner you have a treatment the better.

When you feel that your body just needs a general tune-up.

If you are an athlete in any category and wish to keep your body in peak performance mode.

WHY IS IT CALLED BOWEN THERAPY?

It is named after Thomas Ambrose Bowen (1916 – 1982) who began developing the technique in the 1950’s in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. He had a particular interest in ways to alleviate human suffering and began to notice that certain moves on the body had particular effects. He continued to refine the technique during his lifetime, performing about 13,000 treatments a year.

While attending a national health conference in Adelaide in 1974, Mr Bowen met Mr Oswald Rentsch who asked if he could be taught the technique. Oswald spent the next two and a half years studying, then documenting the work.

In 1976, Ossie and his wife Elaine began utilizing the technique in their clinic.

After Mr Bowen’s death, Ossie and Elaine honored his request to teach the technique to others and named it “The Bowen Technique” or “Bowtech”. They held their first seminar in 1986 and by 1990 were teaching it full time throughout Australia. Since then they have been honoring Mr Bowen’s name and technique by introducing it throughout the world.

Through their efforts, the technique now has worldwide recognition, with a large number of instructors and thousands of practitioners in 15 countries and 6 languages. These numbers are steadily growing. There is also a growing list of health professionals who are now recognizing the effectiveness of the technique and the range of problems able to be addressed by it.

WHAT CLIENTS HAVE SAID ABOUT THEIR TREATMENT

Elaine:
"My name is Elaine and I have been having Bowen Therapy sessions for several weeks due to a repetitive strain injury to my neck. Kevin has been able to restore the movement and me free from pain in just 3 sessions.

For many years my head has been turned slightly to the right, since a car accident that left me with whiplash. An unexpected benefit for me from the Bowen Therapy is that after those 3 sessions, I have found that I now naturally face directly to the front instead of on the angle.

Bowen is a gentle therapy and I thoroughly recommend it as a non-aggressive way of helping your body to gain its natural balance."

Elaine C. - Melton, Victoria

Jackie:
"We would just like the world to know how Bowen has really helped our WHOLE family.
I have had fantastic relief from the pain of migraines, nausea, muscle soreness and fatigue associated with chronic chemical sensitivities.

My husband has had treatment for the pain associated with being a “Celiac” and it has helped him greatly with the tummy bloating, pain and fatigue.

Our grandson has had Bowen since birth and has slept right through the night from coming home from hospital and rarely had any colic; I have never seen such a peaceful baby. Our daughter would like all mothers out there suffering sleepless nights from distressed babies to give it a go."

Jackie M. - Melton, Victoria

Rae:
"I must admit I was skeptical after my first experience of the Bowen technique. The treatment is so gentle I could not imagine how it could help. I suffered severe stiffness in the neck region and pain in the lower back.

As these problems had been longstanding I expected only minor relief, but to my surprise, my back pain was completely gone within two days of the first treatment and my neck more mobile. I would recommend that anyone give Bowen a try and especially if other types of treatment have previously failed."

Rae B. - Hillside, Victoria
