5 Ways to Banish Negativity from Your Life

Health Tips
Last Updated Aug 21, 2020

It's easy to get caught up in a negativity loop – we all do it from time to time. The trick is to understand why your outlook is less than sunny and learn how to view life in a positive light. Here are 5 ways to stop negative thinking and start smiling.

1. Meditate to Change Your Thinking

Every second, thousands of thoughts spin through your mind. Some you're aware of, while others dance about in your subconscious mind. Trouble is, even the thoughts you're oblivious to can be cloaked in negativity.

The good news is that you can learn to control your thoughts. You can choose to look at situations optimistically.

Begin by meditating. Sit or lie in a quiet space and simply observe your thoughts. Imagine each thought is coming in on a gentle wave, before it recedes and vanishes. Don't panic if a negative thought crops up – just watch it wash back out to the sea in your mind.

2. Make the Positivity Switch

When you become aware of a negative thought, replace it with a positive one. This is a simple, yet potentially powerful exercise. You'll soon see that it's possible to train your mind to look at life more positively.

Let's say you have a bad thought about a co-worker. Observe that thought and replace it with one that compliments your co-worker, or understands why she is the way she is. When you focus on putting positive energy into the world, instead of negative energy, everyone around you will benefit.

3. Change Your Language

Words have power. If we're in the habit of saying "should", "can't" or "don't", we run the risk of limiting our potential. This limiting self-talk also keeps us from being our best.

You can spin this around simply by changing your language. Instead of saying "I can't finish this project by 5pm", tell yourself "I will finish this project by 5pm" and look at how you can make that happen.

4. Mix with Positive People

The company we keep can largely determine out outlook on life. Try it! Go for coffee with an up-beat person and then catch up with a down-on-their-luck colleague or friend. Observe how you think and feel after seeing each person. Chances are, you feel better when surrounded by energetic and inspiring people. You could almost say their positivity is infectious! And when it rubs off on you, you in turn become more positive and attract good people into your life.

5. Share Your Positivity

As you begin to think more positively – and surround yourself with like-minded people – you may notice a shift in your self and those around you. To cultivate even more positivity, share it! Look for ways to give back to your community, help someone in need and surround yourself with people and things that make you happy.
