Osteopathy is one of a range of natural approaches to treat an array of conditions and illnesses; including endometriosis.  Natural treatments and therapies are increasingly appreciated for their holistic approach and relative lack of side effects, and are now often used with, or in place of, surgery and traditional medical treatments.

What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is the abnormal movement and growth of the cells lining the womb or uterus.  These migrate and attach themselves to adjacent tissue and organs, causing pain, discomfort and sometimes bleeding.  There is no known cause of the condition, but genetic factors together with hormone imbalance and the early arrival of menstruation are thought to be some triggers.  An excess of oestrogen in an individual is thought to play a factor, as the hormone is responsible for the development of endometrial tissue.  Endometriosis can affect women from their early 20’s to 40’s, and can be a traumatic condition to experience as it can impact on long term fertility. Conventional medical treatment typically involves surgery, anti-inflammatory medication and hormone treatment. It should be noted that some hormone treatments do often carry with it the risk of limiting the long term fertility of an individual.

Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a holistic treatment that focuses on realigning elements of the musculo-skeletal system.  This may involve a wide range of techniques including stretching and manipulation of the muscles and joints.  The primary objective of osteopathy is to treat each element of the body as part of a functioning whole.  The treatment is used for a wide range of conditions and illnesses including joint pain, neck and back pain and sports injuries; amongst others. Techniques utilised in treatment include, but are not limited to:

  • Stretching
  • Massage
  • Manipulation and mobilisation of joints
  • Resistance movements; and
  • Deep pressure techniques

A qualified osteopath is best placed to suggest a course of treatment for endometriosis.  This may include a range of osteopathic techniques and manipulation to promote pelvic drainage, relieve uterine congestion and provide relief from the pain associated with the menstrual cycle and this condition.
