Taking a Break for Health and Happiness

Health Tips
Last Updated Feb 23, 2022

When was the last time you took a break from routine, to reflect on your life and where you're headed? With work, family, study and many other commitments, often it can be tricky to take time out and recharge. But allowing yourself the chance to rest and relax can be incredibly beneficial for your health and wellbeing.

I'm writing this post from a secluded spot in regional NSW, where I'm admiring a spectacular view of sweeping valleys and soaring eagles. The winter weather has set the clouds low, encasing the mountain tops in a thick, white blanket.

I've removed myself from my hectic city life (and my iPhone!) to pause. To go inward. To listen to my self.  I'm spending seemingly endless days meditating, writing, bird-watching, bushwalking, baking and just being.

Back at home, life is frantic and I'm forever racing around ticking off a mental to do list. But here, all I have to do is wake, eat and enjoy. It's a stress-free existence and a chance to find better balance.

A Daily Escape

I know not everyone has the luxury of spending a few weeks in solitude. However, countless studies suggest that spending a short amount of time meditating each day can deliver similar results.

A 2011 study published in the Psychiatry Research Journal found that people who meditate for just 30 minutes a day had significant changes in the parts of the brain associated with stress, sense of self and memory.

Numerous other studies have found that meditation and reflection can also:

  • Relieve chronic back pain
  • Improve attention, focus and time management
  • Relieve asthma

How to Unwind

Perhaps the simplest way to unwind in our daily lives is to simply unplug and switch off from stimulation. Find a quiet spot to sit, close your eyes, take a few deep breaths and empty your mind. Or you might like to undertake regular meditation practice, as is explained in our article "How to Meditate".

Of course, the other option is to do as I have and treat yourself to a week or two away. It really can work wonders for your health and wellbeing. Trust me!
