Conditions
Last Updated Sep 10, 2020

Bowen Therapy is one of a growing range of natural treatments or therapies that are being utilised to optimise health or recovery from a variety of conditions, including catarrh.  This is part of a growing trend that has seen many natural therapies incorporated into conventional medical practices, providing comprehensive and complementary care for patients.

What is Catarrh?

Catarrh is a medical term used to describe the excessive production of mucus that often results from an infection, such as a cold; or an allergy caused by environmental factors such as pollen or dust mites. Mucus is the body’s way of protecting the sensitive airways and passageways, as well as a tactic to expel the source of infection.  Catarrh is therefore a symptom of an infection, rather than a condition in itself.  Some typical symptoms of conditions that cause catarrh include:

  • A headache
  • An excess of phlegm
  • Blocked airways
  • Coughing
  • Hearing impairment
  • Tiredness

Bowen Therapy

Bowen Therapy is a holistic muscle release technique similar to massage, in that it focuses on the connective tissues of the body – the muscles, tendons and nerves that permeate the body. The thumb and forefinger are utilised to softly manipulate these muscles and tissues, with the objective of stimulating the neural and muscular pathways.  These actions are intended to balance and stimulate the energy flow of the body and support the ability of the body to heal itself. Bowen Therapy is most often used to treat a range of musculo-skeletal problems, with pain in the back and neck the most common area of concern. Like massage it also is effective at encouraging circulation and drainage, as well as cardiac and respiratory function.

Bowen Therapy and Catarrh

An assessment of the patient’s overall condition typically precedes the actual therapy, with a glass of water often taken to fully hydrate the body.  The manipulation is normally undertaken in stages with rest periods to allow the body to recover, with one or a number of sessions required depending on the condition.  Bowen Therapy is therefore essentially aimed at holistic health, and promoting overall wellbeing.  For catarrh sufferer’s this enhanced immunity can speed up recovery times, and provide relief from the underlying symptoms of the illness – in this case congestion.
