Even though colon hydrotherapy has many devotees, for the uninitiated the treatment still generates apprehension. To find out more and to get a first hand insight into this therapy ntpages caught up with Magda Nowakowski, a registered naturopath at Inner Cleansing Health Clinics. Besides colon hydrotherapy this digestive health clinic in Berwick also offers food allergy testing, naturopathy, far infrared sauna and post-pregnancy body shaping.

Firstly tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

I am a registered naturopath that has a keen interest in digestive disorders and digestive health. As naturopaths, we always look at the state of the digestive system when looking at any health issue our patient may be facing and on many occasions we aim to fix and heal digestive function as one of the focal points of our treatment.

I myself had my fair share of digestive discomfort and various issues when I was younger and found myself researching and reading a lot in regards to natural health, herbal medicine and nutrition. Finally, after many years of travelling and living overseas I decided to come back to Australia and study what I was most passionate about, so I could ultimately educate myself further and therefore help others.

What qualification/s do you hold?

I hold a Bachelors Degree in Health Science (Naturopathy) from the Southern School of Natural Therapies in Melbourne.

Why is colonic hydrotherapy necessary – does our body not handle this naturally?

Humans should evacuate their bowels up to three times per day and usually within 30 minutes of eating. Unfortunately due to dietary choices, stress and being time poor when consuming meals, this is not occurring. Clients who seek professional advice sometimes report that they are only going to the toilet once every 3-7 days and are often told that this is normal. Unfortunately this time frame for bowel evacuation is becoming the norm, however it is certainly not ideal and not how nature intended this process to be. Eliminating waste and toxins is of prime importance to the body and I feel in this day and age it is being neglected.

When is colonic hydrotherapy necessary?

Colonic hydrotherapy should not only be performed when bowel movements slow, or once conditions such as constipation and IBS become chronic – it should ideally be incorporated as part of a regular detox routine. The following conditions are prime situations where this treatment is most effective:

  • People suffering from IBS (irritable bowel syndrome)
  • Chronic constipation
  • Constant bloating and an inability to digest meals properly
  • Excessively high protein diets (notable amongst strength trainers and weightlifters)

All in all, colonic hydrotherapy is an excellent all-round digestive health modality which has many applications.

What health precautions do you take for clients?

We follow strict hygiene protocols for cleaning our machines and we ensure no shortcuts are taken. This includes machine maintenance as recommended by the manufacturer and also government health regulations. Our premises are inspected and assessed regularly for compliance to these standards.

Part of our difference in the way we do things is to also conduct a thorough consultation prior to treatment which ensures that the client has an understanding of the digestive process and how the colon works. We also ensure that a client does not have any contraindications prior to the procedure being performed.

How often are sessions required?

This will vary from client to client depending on their required outcome or medical / symptomology presented. However to clean the entire length of the colon the average is anywhere from 6 to 10 treatments performed at the required intervals, which are determined by the client’s history and symptomatology.

What is ozone colonic hydrotherapy?

Ozone colonic hydrotherapy is a recently developed alternative therapy that combines the benefits of colonic irrigation with ozone therapy. The treatment provides a deeper colon cleanse and a more efficient detox than is possible through standard colonic hydrotherapy alone. Developed in the United States, Inner Cleansing is among the first clinics in Australia to offer the treatment.

"There has been a noticeable difference since we started offering ozone colon hydrotherapy," said Magda Nowakowski a registered Naturopath at Inner Cleansing in Berwick, Melbourne. "Our clients have experienced greatly improved results since we introduced the new treatment some weeks ago."

Ozone, or "trioxygen", has profound healing properties as it can eliminate anaerobic pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and parasites, while protecting gut-friendly bacteria. Medical grade ozone is formed when pure oxygen is passed through an ozone generator. In that process, oxygen molecules that contain two oxygen atoms are converted to ozone, which contains three oxygen atoms. The ozone is then combined with the water that is used for a colonic irrigation to deliver its healing properties to where it is needed most, drawing out even the most entrenched toxins in the colon’s cells.

As ozone is a powerful antibacterial, germicidal and anti-fungicidal agent, harmful bacteria, viruses, cancers, candida, fungi, and toxins cannot live in an ozone rich environment. Even heavy metals, environmental pollutants and old drug residues can be pulled from the body’s cells. In this way the body's healing process is stimulated and the immune system boosted.

The therapy has been enthusiastically embraced by clients at Inner Cleansing. "When I first came to Inner Cleansing for the first time Magda suggested I try ozone therapy, so I did. I did not expect such a massive release of faecal matter compared to regular colonic hydrotherapy sessions. The differences between the two are immense and now that I have tried ozone therapy I doubt I will ever go back," reported our client Shoshana Sadia.

Case studies in the United States have found that ozone hydrotherapy can reduce lactic acid accumulation and treat chronic viral infections, such as hepatitis and herpes. The treatment increases energy and assists patients with autoimmune diseases and interstitial cystitis, as well as helping prevent depression and candida overgrowth.Ozone also purifies the skin and improves circulation. The efficient cleansing process eliminates toxins associated with colds, flu, asthma, congestion and allergies.

"Ozone is used to purify water in over 100 major cities in Europe. It converts sewerage into pure drinking water. Just imagine what it could do for your blood stream, cells, lymph fluids, skin and brain," said Ms Nowakowski.

Tell us about coffee implants and how they originated?

No one knows when the first daring soul filled the enema bag with a quart of java. What is known is that the coffee enema appeared at least as early as 1917 and was found in the prestigious Merck Manual until 1972. In the 1920's, German scientists found that a caffeine solution could open the bile ducts and stimulate the production of bile in the liver of experimental animals.

Dr. Max Gerson used this clinically as part of a general detoxification regimen, first for tuberculosis, then cancer. Caffeine, he postulated, will travel up the hemorrhoidal to the portal vein and then to the liver itself. Gerson noted some remarkable effects of this procedure. For instance, patients could dispense with all pain-killers once on the enemas. Many people have noted the paradoxical calming effect of coffee enemas.

And while coffee enemas can relieve constipation, Gerson cautioned: "Patients have to know that coffee enemas are not given for the function of the intestines but for the stimulation of the liver."

Coffee enemas were an established part of medical practice when Dr. Max Gerson introduced them into cancer therapy in the 1930's. Basing himself on German Laboratory work, Gerson believed that caffeine could stimulate the liver and gallbladder to discharge bile. He felt this process could contribute to the health of the cancer patient.

Are coffee implants safe and what is their benefit?

In 1981, Dr. Lee Wattenberg and his colleagues were able to show that substances found in coffee - kahweol and cafestol palmitate - promote the activity of a key enzyme, glutathione S-transferase, above the norm. This system detoxifies a vast array of electrophiles from the bloodstream and, according to Gar Hildenbrand of the Gerson Institute, it "must be regarded as an important mechanism for carcinogen detoxification." This enzyme group is responsible for neutralizing free radicals, harmful chemicals now commonly implicated in the initiation of cancer. In mice, for example, these systems are enhanced 600% in the liver and 700% in the bowel when coffee beans are added to their diet.

Dr. Peter Lechner, who is investigating the Gerson method at the Landeskrankenhaus of Graz, Austria, has reported that "coffee enemas have a definite effect on the colon which can be observed with an endoscope." F.W. Cope (1977) has postulated the existence of a "tissue damage syndrome." When cells are challenged by poison, oxygen deprivation, malnutrition or a physical trauma they lose potassium, take on sodium and chloride, and swell up with excess water.

Another scientist (Ling) has suggested that water in a normal cell is contained in an "ice-like" structure. Being alive requires not just the right chemicals but the right chemical structure. Cells normally have a preference for potassium over sodium but when a cell is damaged it begins to prefer sodium. This craving results in a damaged ability of cells to repair themselves and to utilise energy. Further, damaged cells produce toxins: Around tumors are zones of "wounded" but still non-malignant tissue, swollen with salt and water.

Gerson believed it axiomatic that cancer could not exist in normal metabolism. He pointed to the fact that scientists often had to damage an animal's thyroid and adrenals just to get a transplanted tumor to "take." He directed his efforts toward creating normal metabolism in the tissue surrounding a tumor.

It is the liver and small bowel which neutralise the most common tissue toxins: polyamines, ammonia, toxic bound nitrogen and electrophiles. These detoxification systems are probably enhanced by the coffee enema. A paper in the prestigious medical journal Physiological Chemistry and Physics reported that "caffeine enemas cause dilation of bile ducts, which facilitates excretion of toxic cancer breakdown products by the liver and dialysis of toxic products across the colonic wall."

In addition, theophylline and theobromine (two other chemicals in coffee) dilate blood vessels and counter inflammation of the gut; the palmitates enhance the enzyme system responsible for the removal of toxic free radicals from the serum; and the fluid of the enema then stimulates the visceral nervous system to promote peristalsis and the transit of diluted toxic bile from the duodenum and out of the rectum. Since the enema is generally held for 15 minutes, and all the blood in the body passes through the liver every three minutes, "these enemas represent a form of dialysis of blood across the gut wall" (Healing Newsletter, #13, May-June, 1986).

We find that the coffee solution used is absorbed through the colon wall in about a 10 minute period and another 5 minutes later the coffee has travelled up the Portal vein to the liver.

In what circumstances is colonic hydrotherapy not recommended?

Under the following circumstances colonic hydrotherapy is not recommended:

  • Inguinal Hernia
  • Intestinal perforations
  • All or certain stages of pregnancy
  • Within 6 – 12 weeks of abdominal or haemorrhoidal surgery
  • Acute liver failure, except if it is due to Hepatitis C contracted years before
  • Active or bleeding colitis
  • Severe Anaemia – in this case, it can cause the patient to faint
  • Aneurysm
  • Colon Cancer except when cleared by their doctor to undergo treatment
  • Active Crohn’s disease - except when it is located in the small intestine, in which case the treatment can proceed with doctor’s clearance
  • Colitis - if active or bleeding
  • Renal Insufficiencies – dialysis patients can undergo treatment if a client is on retracted fluid intake, but a doctor’s release is required
  • Severe or bleeding haemorrhoids
  • Lupus, if the client is on medication they cannot proceed with treatment
  • Fissure or Fistula, however if healed for 3 or more months treatment can proceed.
