How Powerful is Our Subconscious Mind?

People have always been fascinated by the power of the subconscious mind and what it can do. So how powerful really is it? Well, it makes up around 95% of the human brain. It's the control room of your mind, and it stores information from the very day we are born. From the day we are born, we are already starting to collect data of our life by storing beliefs, memories, previous experiences, your skills and behaviours, how we respond to things that happen in our life. The subconscious mind also runs the program for eating, breathing and digestion so that we don't have to run these tasks that need constant attention in our conscious mind.

How Does the Subconscious Trigger Your Emotional Response?

The subconscious mind stores data and then retrieves it when needed. It is responsible for switching on our automatic responses to situations, ensuring that we respond in a way that is consistent with our values and beliefs. That's why it isn't difficult to reprogram your subconscious mind; all you need to do is repeat positive affirmations for your subconscious mind to accept them (e.g. I am smart and deserve this job promotion).

That's why some people like reading inspirational quotes on a daily basis. By focusing your thoughts on uplifting ideas, your subconscious mind will begin to apply a positive pattern in the way that you think and your outlook on life. If you get up in the morning and say to yourself you're going to have a bad day, then you probably will, but if you condition your mind with positive emotions and thoughts from the moment you wake up, then even if the day is hectic and things come up that may be unpleasant, you will be able to tackle situations in a different more positive way, hence with a more favourable outlook.

How Do You Change Your Subconscious Mind's Mental Processes?

With your subconscious mind, it is like having a helper 24/7 that doesn't question what you do or enforce morals and beliefs on you. It listens, takes in patterns of thoughts, emotions and behaviours and stores them for future reference so that when needed they can be retrieved.

If the information that has been stored in the subconscious mind is out of date, no longer how we want to live, then we need to change it, otherwise our subconscious mind will just keep running the program as normal because it thinks that's what we want.

We all have the power to change what we want for ourselves in our lives. Sometimes it takes a little conscious awareness at the start to get the subconscious mind thinking differently, and then before you know it, it can change the program that has been running that is not necessarily who you are or want to be now.

Commonly Asked Questions

How does your subconscious affect behaviour?

Your subconscious mind causes you to feel emotionally and physically uncomfortable whenever you attempt to do anything new or different. It goes against changing any of your established patterns of behaviour. You can feel your subconscious pulling you back toward your comfort zone each time you try something new. Say, if you're accustomed to negative self-talk or have been led by negative emotions all your life, and then you suddenly try to shift to positive ones, you may find it challenging in the beginning.

Can you control your subconscious?

Nature has given humans an absolute control over the information that enters the subconscious mind, through the five senses. However, this does not mean that everyone exercises control over their mental processes. Even more, in the majority of cases, the average person does not exercise this control.

What frequency is the subconscious mind?

Theta brain waves, measured at 4-7 Hz, are the brain frequencies of the barely conscious states just before sleeping and just after awakening. Theta is the intriguing border between the conscious and the subconscious worlds.

Can the subconscious solve problems?

Psychologists have discovered that the subconscious mind can sometimes solve problems more effectively than our conscious mind. Somehow the "operating system" solves the problem in the background only after we stop thinking about it directly.

Which side of the brain is the subconscious?

Your conscious mind is your left-brain function and your subconscious mind is your right-brain function. Being in a right-brain state changes your brain chemistry from stress (fight or flight) to relaxation response. It is accompanied by a feeling of relaxation and connection.

In conclusion, if we take the time to go straight to the source and access our thoughts, feelings, emotions and behaviours directly via the subconscious mind, you will find how amazing and powerful the subconscious mind really is.

There are many ways of doing this, via meditation, hypnosis and also by being conscious of the changes we want in our life, setting goals and affirming our new patterns and behaviours daily. The more you practise, the better you become at it, to a point where it just becomes normal.

FAQs About the Subconscious Mind

Can your subconscious mind change your body?

Yes, your subconscious mind can better or make your body worse. When you tap into your subconscious, you can alter how your body digests food, gain access to repressed memories and feelings, boost your immune system, and help you heal your mind and body so that you won't have to treat them constantly.

How do I reprogram my subconscious mind fast?

You can break unhealthy mental habits by concentrating on changing just one thing for a month. Make sure you do it before going to bed, or when you wake up in the morning, to activate your brain's neural plasticity.

Can your subconscious mind hear when you are sleep?

Research shows that the brain may still be able to understand words it hears while we sleep. That information supports its decision-making capacity at the conscious state.
