How Do I Live a Toxin-Free Life?

Britney Spears was on to something. She may have sung "Don't you know that you're toxic?" in one of her top pop songs to reference a bad boyfriend, but she was inadvertently making a point about our environment. We live in a toxic world. But that doesn't mean we have to live a toxic life. Here are some top tips for reducing toxins in your environment.

Clean Green

Few people enjoy cleaning. But when you do have to do the dreaded chores, choose natural. Many common household cleaning products such as window cleaner, surface spray, detergents and dishwashing liquids contain a chemical cocktail that may make you and your family sick. Make a multi-purpose spray with 1 cup of white vinegar, 1 cup of water, ½ teaspoon of tea tree or eucalyptus oil and – optional – ½ teaspoon of rosemary oil. Simply place all the ingredients into a spray bottle, shake it and spray. Too easy! You can also kill mould with 2 cups of water and around 14 drops of tea tree oil and clove oil. Spray it, leave for around 20 minutes and then wipe it down with the abovementioned multi-purpose spray.

Air It Out

Fresh air works wonders for circulating the air in your home and preventing allergens. And if you're keen to add a soft scent to your abode, forget chemical-laden air fresheners as these may interfere with your hormones. Instead, burn essential oils or bring in a bunch of fresh flowers. Just avoid candles, as they may release toxic fumes into the environment and be a real health hazard. If you're keen for candles, choose beeswax.

Plastic-Free Zone

Plastic is problematic. It's been found to contribute to a range of ailments and inllnesses, including cancer. Always choose BPA-free products – which, thankfully, are becoming  more widely available – and never heat up food in plastic containers. Glass and stainless steel are also simple – and healthy – storage options.

Turn It Off

How many devices do you have in your home? Computers, microwaves, mobile phones, tablets and TVs emit electromagnetic radiation (EMR). And while the jury is out on how harmful this radiation can be to our health, it's best to cut back on your electronics. Turn off the Wi-Fi when you're not using it and keep electronics out of your bedroom while you sleep.

Ditch the Non-Stick

A proven carcinogenic, Teflon may not be as good for us as we thought. Some studies have shown that it breaks down at high heat and may seep into your food. Instead, choose cast iron or stainless steel cookware.
