Meditation can work wonders for adults. But what about meditation for children? Is it effective? Here we look at meditation techniques for kids and how they work.

Meditation for Stillness

Perhaps the biggest benefit of regular meditation practice is that it stills the mind. In this age of attention deficit disorder (ADD) diagnoses, stillness is a skill many of us struggle with. And as we get older and are more involved in our busy adult lives, practising stillness is tricky.

Starting a meditation practice at a younger age may help us develop a greater awareness of our thoughts, and an understanding of how and why to quieten the mind.

Meditation for Concentration

Most children are full of beans. They bounce about with endless energy. And while that’s all part of being a kid, there are times when little ones need to find focus and concentration. The classroom, exam room, sports field or music hall are all places where concentration is key, allowing kids to develop their skills and master talents that may take them on to a fruitful, focused and purposeful life.

That’s where meditation comes in – it allows children to develop a mind-body connection, practice mindfulness, solve problems and discover the untapped power of the mind.

How Meditation for Children Works

Kids’ meditation is about a gentle introduction to the practice, in a way that makes sense to them. Since meditation doesn’t need to be aligned with any faith or belief system, it’s accessible to everyone. And it allows children and their parents to put any spin on it they wish – such as connection with a higher spirit, or simply a chat to retreat, relax and refocus.

There are plenty of online resources with meditation ideas for children. Many focus on helping kids and teens make sense of their emotions.

Children may benefit from guided meditation. You can ask your child to close their eyes, while you ask them to focus on their breathing, and tighten and then relax each part of the body. You could ask them to visualise colours, or walking in a garden, or pick a positive word and focus on it throughout the meditation.

You can even ask your kids to come up with their own meditation practice. They’re sure to enjoy the practice now and into their adult lives.
