You may have heard of tai chi, but what about qigong? The ancient Chinese technique is making waves in the west for its health and wellness benefits. But what is qigong and how might it benefit you?

An Introduction to Qigong

First seen in China 4000 years ago, qigong (pronounced ‘chee-gong’ and also spelled chi kung or chi gung) combines various free-flowing movements, breathing techniques and meditation-like intentions.

While similar to tai chi, qigong is a separate health approach. It comprises two words – qi, which means life force – and gong, which means mastery or effort.

How is Qigong Practised

According to the National Qigong Association, qigong has three branches – martial, medical and spiritual. All incorporate postures (similar to asanas in yoga), a mental intention and breathing exercises.

You can practice a softer style of qigong, or up the intensity with an energetic, fast-paced regime.

Traditionally, qigong practice begins with a lesson in the main movements and breathing techniques. Once you have perfected the postures, you will then work to discover the flow of movement – also known as moving meditation.

Some postures are held for a short amount of time, while others are held for longer. It’s believed that these longer-held postures improve the flow of energy. They’re known as still meditation postures.

There is also sitting meditation, which focuses the mind. All three can combine visualisations as energy moved through the body.

Qigong: More than Exercise

Qigong is more than movement. By incorporating meditation and visualisations, many qigong practitioners are healers who work to balance energy or unblock chi.

It’s said that qigong can heal a range of ailments, including chronic illness, poor circulation, back and neck pain and even cancer.

Thanks to its meditation slant, qigong may also boost mental clarity, wellness and self-esteem.

Qigong is also accessible to all, and can be practised at a range of levels and intensities. So whatever your age, body type or lifestyle, qigong may add the balance and tranquility you’ve been searching for.
