If you just can't seem to kick the cigarettes to the curb, are having trouble getting to sleep at night, or suffer from anxiety that you can’t get under control, you might consider hypnotherapy. You could also consult a hypnotherapist to help you through childbirth.

Professional Bodies Set Standards

There are a number of professional bodies that hypnotherapists can register with in Australia.  The National Hypnotherapists Register of Australia (NHRA), the Australian Society of Clinical Hypnotherapists (ASCH) and the Australian Hypnotherapists Association (AHA) set ethical and professional standards their members must abide by.  When consulting a hypnotherapist, your safety and comfort are of prime importance. You need to feel comfortable with the treating therapist to get the most out of it.

The Consultation

Note that a “hypnotist” is not the same as a hypnotherapist – hypnotists often make exaggerated claims and are regarded as showmen by the professional bodies. A hypnotherapist will first help you to relax, so feeling comfortable with the therapist you have chosen is really important – this will also help you to achieve the best results.

The hypnotherapist will gather information about you and what you want from the treatment, then begin with a deep breathing exercise to help you to further relax and let go of your defences.

They will then help to go into an altered state of consciousness known as deepening where you focus only on what your therapist is saying and ignore all other stimuli.  The hypnotherapist cannot force a change, but can make suggestions once you are in the deepening stage.  These suggestions will help you achieve your goals and change your behaviour.  Towards the end of your session your hypnotherapist will gradually bring you back to alertness.

To find a hypnotherapist in your area with experience treating your specific issue, ensure you do your research before beginning treatment.
