Protein supplements were once the exclusive commodity of body builders and other fitness fanatics. Although they’re becoming increasingly mainstream, some people are still confused about how protein supplements can benefit them.  While some diets advocate using protein supplements as meal replacements, this doesn’t teach people how to eat well long term.

Successful weight loss is all about losing fat forever, not just losing fat fast.

Nevertheless, protein supplements can be great to help you lose weight or just maintain healthy weight loss. Since many are chocolate-flavoured, they’re an ideal way to curb cravings or satisfy your desire for an after-dinner indulgence that isn’t too indulgent. Aussie Bodies also make several flavours of protein chips, which are perfect if you have more of a savoury tooth.

Protein powders (which you blend with water or milk to make a shake) can often be successfully integrated into your regular cooking in order "bulk up" a recipe and make it more filling and still good for you. It's also worth experimenting with different ways to blend these powders—some taste terrible made with water, but great when made with low-fat milk.

Today, most supermarkets contain a small variety of protein supplements. For a more diverse range, it’s better to visit either specialist health food stores, sports supplement stores or online retailers. But remember that some protein supplements are designed specifically for body builders, so they may be too high in calories and fat if you’re trying to lose weight. Always check the labels and be careful about what you consume.

Protein supplements are an ideal healthy snack if you’re in a hurry. They’re great to have on standby in your handbag, briefcase or office drawer for those days that feel as though they’ve only got twelve hours instead of twenty-four!
