What’s Your Dosha?

What’s Your Dosha?
Have you ever noticed how certain foods make you feel light, while others weigh you down? According to Ayurveda, it all comes down to your dosha.

What is a Dosha?

Ayurvedic medicine assumes that we all have a mix of three mind and body constitutions, called doshas. The three doshas are Kapha, Vata and Pitta.

Each of us tends to have one dominant constitution and a secondary constitution that helps carve their emotional and mental characteristics.

What are the Characteristics of the Doshas?

The three doshas are quite distinct and have unique elements. Here is a basic overview of each dosha:
  • Kapha: Associated with the body’s fluids and tissues and made from water and earth. People with a Kapha-dominant dosha tend to have smooth and oily skin, a relaxed mood and a hearty appetite. They tend to have a large body build and crave sweet foods.
  • Vata: Related to the body’s movement and a dry skin type. People with a Vata constitution may be quite creative, have a slight build and enjoy sour foods.
  • Pitta: Associated with fire, the Pitta nature suggests a strong appetite and fast digestion. Pitta people tend to be fair-skinned with a medium build and are quite organised.

How Your Dosha Influences Your Health

When your dosha is out of balance – due to diet and other factors – it can also cause your other doshas to be imbalanced. This can impact on your health and wellness. For instance, if Vata is out of balance, the person may feel anxious and experience insomnia and weight loss. On the other hand, if there is too much heat in the body, Pitta can become aggravated and cause acne, inflammation and anger.

How to Find Out Your Dosha

Many online sites and books contain quizzes to help you identify your dominant dosha. However, Ayurveda is a complex medicine and is best practised by a professional. Contact an Ayurveda practitioner in your local area to book a consultation.
