What is a Dosha?Ayurvedic medicine assumes that we all have a mix of three mind and body constitutions, called doshas. The three doshas are Kapha, Vata and Pitta.
Each of us tends to have one dominant constitution and a secondary constitution that helps carve their emotional and mental characteristics.
What are the Characteristics of the Doshas? The three doshas are quite distinct and have unique elements. Here is a basic overview of each dosha:
- Kapha: Associated with the body’s fluids and tissues and made from water and earth. People with a Kapha-dominant dosha tend to have smooth and oily skin, a relaxed mood and a hearty appetite. They tend to have a large body build and crave sweet foods.
- Vata: Related to the body’s movement and a dry skin type. People with a Vata constitution may be quite creative, have a slight build and enjoy sour foods.
- Pitta: Associated with fire, the Pitta nature suggests a strong appetite and fast digestion. Pitta people tend to be fair-skinned with a medium build and are quite organised.
