What is Thought Field Therapy?

Thought Field Therapy (TFT) is a complementary treatment developed over 40 years ago by American psychologist and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) pioneer Dr Roger Callahan PhD. It holistically balances the body's energetic system to alleviate symptoms of an array of physical and mental conditions which are linked to negative emotions.

TFT combines elements of acupuncture, Chinese medicine, applied Kinesiology, CBT and psychoanalysis. It employs a precise tapping sequence on the meridian points on the body using the fingers, to eliminate negative emotions that are associated with certain life experiences.

How Does Thought Field Therapy Work?

A "thought field" refers to an experience which a person may associate with fear, anxiety, guilt or other strong emotions. It is the framework of their emotional disturbances which Dr Callahan labels as perturbations. Each perturbation obstructs a corresponding meridian point on the body and causes a host of health issues.

The tapping method unblocks the meridians and balances the flow of Qi, or life force, which is vital to maintaining holistic wellness.

Unlike other psychology modalities, TFT doesn't require the client to discuss their painful experience, or trauma, with the therapist; they only have to relive it in their head so that they can perform the treatment.

What are the Benefits of Thought Field Therapy?

Research shows that treating oneself with TFT and performing it without the guidance of a TFT practitioner has a success rate of 80%. On the other hand, the success rate of working with a practitioner's guided therapy is 95%. Either way, using TFT can miraculously relieve a variety of physical and psychological conditions, including:

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Addiction
  • Fears and phobias
  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Headaches
  • Back pain

What Can You Expect from Thought Field Therapy?

A typical TFT session can last anywhere between 5 and 15 minutes. It starts with the therapist asking the client to create a clear, mental picture of an experience that they associate with negative emotions. Then the client will be asked to rate their feelings about it on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being less negative and 10 being severely negative.

The Thought Field therapist will then instruct the client to tap specific areas on their body in a gentle manner following a precise sequence. The target meridians are located on the hands, face and upper body.

After the tapping session, the client will be asked to think about the problem again and see if doing so brings about negative feelings. In most cases, they couldn't associate the experience with any negative emotions anymore. A TFT doesn't have to be repeated as one session can instantly eliminate all the thought fields that a client wants to eliminate from their system.

Is it safe?

Thought Field Therapy is a non-invasive procedure, so it is safe for everyone regardless of age. Besides removing negative emotions associated with past experiences, this type of therapy can also help rebalance the autonomic nervous system.
