What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system. Chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, hip and pelvic issues, neck pain and headaches, disc injury, rib, knee, shoulder, and elbow joint issues, TMJ and so on.

Doctors of Chiropractic often referred to as Chiropractors or Chiropractic physicians practice a hands-on approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counseling where applicable.

What can a chiropractor do for you?

Chiropractors specialize in the treatment of the spine and its associated tissues; such conditions chiropractors commonly treat include:
  • Back tension/tightness
  • Low back pain
  • Disc injuries
  • Neck pain
  • Headaches and Migraines
  • Scoliosis
  • Shoulder/elbow/wrist/knee/hip pain
  • Childhood complaints

FAQ'S...

1. How long does a treatment take?

Your first treatment is up to 40 minutes and involves a comprehensive medical history taking, examination and treatment.
Subsequent treatments are 15-20 minutes.

2. What does a treatment involve?

Your first treatment will involve an analysis/medical history where Katie will ask you specific questions related to your injury or health issue.

Soft tissue work/massage is used to help remove any muscle tension.

Katie then uses a variety of testing procedures including muscle testing, orthopaedic testing, neurological testing, range of motion assessment, palpation etc to identify affected areas and form a diagnosis.

Once the affected areas have been identified, they are corrected using gentle non-manipulative techniques or when applicable manipulative techniques -depending on your comfort level, what is deemed appropriate and what you feel happy to have done in terms of therapy. KTApe, Dry Needling and excercise/rehabiliation procedures and advice are used and prescribed to assist you in your goals to recovery.

Katie is big on letting the individual guide the therapy so that they feel comfortable and safe. Katie will always discuss what is going on and the various options of treatment prior to any therapy. There will not be any surprises as she always explains what she is going to do and the various ways in which she can go about treatment so you always feel comfortable and safe in her care.

3. What types of therapy does Katie use?

The treatment you receive may be a mixture of the following or all or none, depending on your presentation, what is most appropriate and what you feel comfortable with:

A)Joint and disc decompressions whereby joints and /or discs are gently decompressed or pushed into a better position ie. Off any nerves that may be causing pain;

B)Activator adjustments. An Activator is a hand-held tool which emits a painless pulse to the spine, it is a form of non-manipulative therapy;

C)Manual adjustments and spinal manipulative therapy;

D)Soft tissue work-massage techniques;

E)Dry needling acupuncture;

F)Kinesiotaping;

G)Rehab/Excercise/Stretching and strengthening advice and routines

4. What type of treatment will be used in my case?

Which form of treatment you get depends on several factors.

  1. how comfortable you are with adjustments/prior chiropractic experience and what you would prefer. Katie will describe the various options to you prior to any treatment.
  2. how severe your condition is and how long you've had it for.
  3. your age. ie children and babies, the elderly or those with osteoporosis would usually only ever get an activator adjustment if required.

Katie will demonstrate or discuss the options available to you and which she would suggest in your particular case.

5. How much is it?

Your first consultation is $105 including treatment.
Subsequent treatments are $75

Hicaps onsite, so if you are in a health fund, we swipe your card (and now some funds offer phone tap options) and you pay the gap. You can check with your specific health fund how much they cover, as they all vary.

GPs also refer some clients under the CDM plan for 5 treatments under Medicare which covers approximately $55 of your treatment if you qualify for the referral from your GP.

6. Will I have to have X-Rays or MRIs?

A history will be taken and if an underlying condition or pathology is suspected further imaging or referral may be required as per Medicare guidelines.

7. I've never been to a Chiropractor and dont know what to expect

Katie is a friendly and caring person who will talk you through each step of the treatment. There are no surprises. Katie discusses the treatment options available and chats with you about what you would prefer. She will tailor treatment to your requirements.

8. How is Dr Katie different to other Chiropractors?

Katie tailors her treatments to the individual. She delivers longer appointment times (40 mins new pt, 15-20 mins standard) which allows a more thorough look at the patients problems, and also incorporates soft tissue massage into treatments. All in a friendly, caring way.

9. I have a bad back how long will it take to fix?

The number of treatments required to help your back depends on several factors:

  • What is causing the pain (it may be a tight piriformis muscle in the glut or some pelvic instability with pregnancy right through to multiple disc injuries and so on).
  • How long you've had the injury (scar tissue may have set in which can slow progress). eg. Have you had the problem for 2 days or 20 years.
  • How closely you adhere to Katie's advice on treatment scheduling, stretching, strengthening, the things 'to do and things not to do'.
  • Your bodys ability to heal'; eg smokers can take longer than non-smokers to heal due to poor capillary-fill.

Katie will give you a guideline of how many treatments it will take to correct your spine and maintain your spinal health. Depending on your situation, ie long standing disc bulges causing frequent flare-ups.

10. What types of things does she treat?
  • Muscular tension
  • Back and neck pain
  • Sciatica
  • Headaches and migraines-can be the result of a neck misalignment
  • Disc problems
  • Shoulder injuries
  • Knee injuries
  • Hip injuries
  • Jaw problems-clicky, off-centre or painful jaw
  • Pregnancy related conditions
