What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is using hypnosis as therapy. Hypnosis is a pleasantly relaxing altered state of consciousness, with the purpose to communicate directly with the subconscious so that change can occur on the deepest level. In this state, your mind is more receptive to acceptable and beneficial suggestions.

Can I be hypnotised against my will?

No. You must be a willing subject for it to work.

What will it feel like?

You will feel mildly relaxed. Any deeper level of relaxation is a nice bonus! You may notice a heavy sensation, or perhaps you will feel lighter than usual- the sensations vary from person to person. You will not be asleep, as you will always be aware of what is going on. If a person is really tired then they may fall asleep, but they will then no longer be in hypnosis and can’t take on any suggestions.

We often go into trance without even realising it- day dreaming, “zoning out” while driving etc.

Will I lose control (ie bark like a dog or reveal secrets)?

There is a big difference between stage hypnosis and hypnosis for therapy. In stage hypnotherapy people will accept the suggestions if they believe it to be in good fun and for entertainment but that is not the purpose of hypnotherapy. People who are hypnotised would not do anything that they wouldn’t do in the waking state. You cannot be made to do anything against your will. Hypnosis is not a master-slave relationship, and you are fully aware at all times of what is happening. You will retain your morals and values.

Likewise, you will not reveal any secrets. Hypnosis is not a truth serum and subjects will always retain enough awareness to not reveal anything they are not comfortable with or ready to reveal.

The subconscious mind is protective. It will only accept suggestions it likes, and reject the ones it doesn’t.

Will I remember everything?

Yes. Some people may say “I wasn’t hypnotised- I remember the whole thing!” and they actually were hypnotised because hypnosis isn’t a state of being unaware. It’s quite the opposite- it’s being more aware with your senses heightened. Only under special circumstances would things be forgotten, for example, if the hypnotist gives specific instructions to delay recall until they feel it is beneficial for the client to remember.

Is it possible for a subject to not be brought out of hypnosis?

No. You cannot be stuck in hypnosis as you are always aware and in control. Hypnosis is not a master-slave relationship but a cooperative one and will only work with your consent. If a hypnotist stopped talking for any reason, the subject would fairly soon bring themselves out of hypnosis.

Do weak minded people make better subjects?

It isn’t a matter of weak vs strong minds. I.e “I’m too intelligent to be hypnotised”. The only thing that affects ones ability to be hypnotised is their willingness. The results of hypnotism can actually strengthen your mind as you gain greater control over mind and body.

What if I can’t be hypnotised?

Everyone can be hypnotised, it just comes down to the person’s willingness and feeling comfortable. For example if someone is afraid of losing control in an unacceptable way, this can lead to over analysing and a lot of internal dialogue which will interfere with being able to relax enough to go into hypnosis.

Hypnosis can also be a case of practice makes perfect- the more we go into hypnosis, the deeper the feelings of relaxation.
