Counselling Services

I provide relationship counselling for individuals and couples in my consulting room in Avalon. The room is as safe and friendly as my two little dogs who will be delighted to greet you.

Individual Relationship Counselling

I have extensive experience and training in many areas of the counselling field, however my speciality is working with individuals who are experiencing relationship pain, whether with partners, or with various family members or even within friendships. Visit my how I work page to read more.

Couples Counselling

I work with couples who are experiencing negative and destructive patterns of communicating and help them develop the skills for forming and maintaining healthy and loving relationships. I also work with couples who have committed to a relationship and want to learn how to make it work as well as they can. Visit my how I work page to read more.

Meditation Practice

I offer meditation practice and instruction for those who are interested in learning more about themselves and who wish to foster an increased ability to self soothe and relax, using various breathing techniques.

Hypnosis

I can help you to free up from unhelpful beliefs, habits or negative thought patterrns with the use of Eriksonian hypnosis. This method allows us to create a script together, using words and phrases that have meaning for you, facilitating a way to loosen blocks you may have to change or to help with pain management.

EFT (emotional freedom technique)

Developed from Thought Field Therapy by psychologist Roger Callahan, this is an energetic therapy which uses our bodys energy system to release blockages created by negative thought patterns. We release these by tapping on accu pressure points throughout the body, rather like do it yourself accupuncture, without the needles! I have been doing EFT with my clients for 14 years and many report feelings of immediate relief as well as the reassurance and comfort that comes with knowing you have a tool you can use any time you need it. It works especially well for those who have experienced a trauma of some kind.

Length of Sessions

I meet with people individually who are either currently in relationship and struggling or with couples experiencing difficulties. All sessions are 60 minutes in length, unless you choose a 90 minute couple consultation which can be arranged in advance.

  • initial sessions

The first session is a getting to know you conversation in which I will make a thorough assessment of your needs and goals for therapy. In the initial session you will experience how I work and have a strong sense of how we can work together as well as getting a good feel for the environment in which we will be working. You may feel hopeful and have a sense of relief because you have taken the first step in creating the relationship you desire. Clients often report that they experience new awareness and insights from this very first session.

  • subsequent sessions

For individuals, subsequent sessions are 60 minutes. For couples, sessions are generally 60 minutes, and occasionally we arrange 90-minute sessions, depending on your needs.

Length of Therapy

This of course is a very difficult question to answer because every client is different and has unique needs. The length of therapy can depend on a number of factors, which may include the type of issue, the amount of time that negative patterns have been ingrained and the willingness and motivation you have to change.

On average, clients can tend to have between 8-20 sessions. Some research suggests that it can take 3-4 months to start experiencing long-lasting change, however many clients report that they notice changes after only a few sessions. Some clients may need medium to longer term therapy, which may last longer than a year.

Together we determine how often you will attend, based on your needs and schedule, which may be weekly, fortnightly or monthly. In my experience, the clients who have the most positive outcomes from therapy attend weekly, or schedule and attend sessions on a regular basis.
