Our education philosophy extends beyond our courses with free monthly webinars and research updates via email. The ever changing landscape of the weight management industry is such that it can be difficult to keep up to date with new research, findings and papers; it is our goal to create a ‘hub’ for professionals to network, learn and engage for the betterment of the industry.

Course Information

This is a nationally and internationally accredited course. There are 11 modules in this course:

  1. Work effectively in the weight management industry
    Develop weight management industry knowledge
    Identify the background, risk and consequences associated with obesity
    Identify client needs
    Implement client-service practices
    Monitor and improve personal performance
  2. Analyse and apply principles of psychology, mindset and behaviour modification to weight management
    Identify the psychological principles of behaviour change as they relate to weight management
    Discuss the link between body image, self-esteem and mind set
    Support clients to undertake behaviour change
    Implement strategies to support client behavioural changes
    Apply a variety of motivational techniques for behaviour modification
  3. Analyse and apply principles of nutritional science to meal planning
    Identify the foundational principles of nutrition
    Identify the role of nutrition in relation to digestive health
    Develop skills in interpreting food labels
    Apply nutritional principles to healthy eating and weight management
    Provide nutritional information and advice to clients
    Develop meal plans in accordance with relevant dietary guidelines
  4. Apply basic anatomy and physiology principles to exercise
    Recommendations for weight management
    Apply knowledge of anatomical terminology and descriptions of the musculoskeletal structure of the body to exercise for weight management
    Relate the structure and function of the cardio-respiratory and nervous systems to exercise for weight management
    Apply knowledge of exercise for weight management
    Identify relevant pre-programming information
    Make recommendations for exercise as part of a weight management program
  5. Undertake an initial weight management consultation
    Conduct a pre-screening interview
    Receive and interpret referrals from medical or allied health practitioners
    Determine the weight management goals of a client
    Conduct a weight management appraisal
    Deliver a personalised weight management program
    Monitor and respond to client responses and progress
    Maintain records
  6. Undertake regular weight management consultations
    Clarify client needs and expectations
    Analyse the weight management program
    Receive and interpret referrals from medical or allied health practitioners
    Motivate clients
    Review and amend the client’s weight management program
  7. Design, plan and deliver weight management clinics for groups
    Design the weight management clinic session plan
    Deliver a weight management group clinic
    Evaluate the session
  8. Work collaboratively with networks
    Develop and maintain networks
    Review network performance
  9. Make a presentation
    Prepare a presentation

  10. Address customer needs
    Assist customer to articulate needs

Learning Outcomes

This qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent in a range of activities and functions within the weight management industry in a broad range of settings, including working collaboratively with appropriate medical and allied health professionals to help motivate and mentor adolescents 13 – 17 or adults 18+ to achieve their weight management goals.

Those with this level of competency will be expected to provide a range of programs and services including an understanding of psychology and the effect on behaviour, provision of appropriate meal plans and recommendation of exercise to create a weight management plan to achieve the adolescents’ (13 – 17) and adults’ (18+) weight management goals.

Vocational outcomes

This course is intended to provide participants with a range of knowledge and skills to perform the following functions associated with the weight management industry:

  • Weight Loss Consultant
  • Weight Management Consultant
  • Motivational Weight Management Coach
  • Wellness Coach
  • Health Coach

General education outcomes

This course is intended to provide participants with the following general education outcomes:

  • Conducting individual and group consultations for the first time and over a period of time
  • Basic physiology and anatomy
  • Nutritional principles
  • Presentation skills
  • Assessing customer needs
  • Analysing mindset and the effect on behaviour modification
  • Networking and working alongside appropriate medical and allied health care practitioners

Community outcomes

This course is intended to provide participants with the following skills and knowledge to contribute to community outcomes such as:

  • Consideration to the increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity
  • Creating a community awareness of the long term benefits of weight management
  • Improved community health
  • Reducing the cost of, and impact on, healthcare associated with obesity and weight related health issues
  • Improving workplace productivity and reducing associated costs with employee sick leave
