Yoga originated in India thousands of years ago. It tones the muscles, enhances flexibility and is soothing and relaxing. Yoga is a spiritual versus a religious practice – there is no requirement to worship any thing or anyone. Yoga is the “union” of body, mind, and spirit.

Yoga comprises the Asanas – the physical poses in yoga, Pranayama - breath control, Pratyahara - withdrawal of the senses and the practice of focusing on yourself and your breath, Dharana – concentration on your movement, focused breathing, and thoughts as you practice

Dhyana – meditation is integral to yoga, as is the concept of Samadhi – liberation, when the mind and soul are in a state of equal balance and the mind is still, while completely aware of the present moment.

The Health Benefits of Yoga for Women include:

  • Releases stress

  • Relaxes mind and body

  • Leaner, stronger body (lose weight)

  • Improves sex life- boosts confidence, energy, endurance.

  • Improves focus

  • Relief from cramps

  • Enhanced circulation and blood flow.

  • Relieves bloating

  • Reduces stress

  • Brings clarity and focuses thoughts – great for balancing mood swings.

Restorative poses relieve hot flashes during menopause

Some women experience Menopause as one of the most challenging times of their life, sometimes continuing for years. Yoga offers a drug-free alternative for treating hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, fatigue, irritability, anxiety and insomnia when a regular practice is undertaken.

Downward Facing Dog is one of the most ideal poses to help relieve the symptoms of menopause, bringing blood to the brain, encouraging a sense of calm, stretching the upper back and legs, strengthening the arms and helping to prevent osteoporosis.

In addition, Meditation and Pranayama are great ways to relieve anxiety and mood swings.

Pregnancy and Labour

During pregnancy and labour Yoga offers better leg circulation, opens the hips (labour), breathing (labour) and relieves back pain.

Postnatal: Yoga provides an abdominal workout, brings stomach muscles together, and releases extra tummy fat, strengthens you in readiness for all the extra lifting and bending you’re doing, Kegel exercises can also strengthen the uterine muscles!

The Various Yoga Styles

Hatha: this is a generic description of any form of yoga that involves asanas (poses).

Vinyasa: a range of poses that combine movement with breath work and depending on the teacher and studio, chanting may be included.

Bikram (hot): The same series of 26 postures is practiced in a room with the temperature held at around 40°C.

Restorative: A gentle yoga style comprising lying down and breathing combined with gentle stretches.

Prenatal: this yoga style is similar to restorative and is adapted to pregnancy/labour.

Anusara: there is a focus on heart-opening backbends and postures.

Iyengar: the poses are held for longer than usual and have a focus on alignment.

Kundalini: the positions are mainly seated positions and include breathing techniques. Ideal for individuals wanting to stimulate their energy with breath and a focus on meditation and chanting.
