About Us

The Bay School of Yoga has been established in the bayside area for many years.

Following ancient traditions, we specialise in a Classical style of Yoga which has been taught for thousands of years yet which is so helpful in our own times - the eightfold path which integrates the physical, mental and intuitive aspects of our lives. Modern life is very busy and juggling the demands of home, family, work and friends can become very tiring! Yoga offers a quiet, centering practice that can begin a journey to greater ease, energy and self- knowledge. Its aim is to bring us into a state of balance and harmony with our pure and peaceful natural Self. As our bodies and minds begin to unwind, we can take the positive teachings of this wonderful practice into our everyday life.

Develop
  • A strong, flexible body
  • Good, stable posture
  • Improved health and wellbeing
  • Regular sleeping patterns
  • Ease of breath and movement
  • Relaxation and stress release
  • Greater Self-awareness
Classes are planned under the direction of the principal, Helen Kershaw who has been teaching yoga since 1970.

About Tamina Muir

Tamina began yoga in one of Helen’s beginner classes 14 years ago and has been practising ever since. In 2002 she completed a Diploma of Yoga Education and began teaching at the Bay School of Yoga in 2004.

With three children of her own, Tamina knows the positive effect that yoga can bring to children and she furthered her study to learn how best to introduce and teach yoga to youngsters from 3-16 years of age.

Currently, Tamina teaches a Classical style of Hatha yoga, a more dynamic 'Yoga Fit' class and a monthly Family Yoga class where parents and children can enjoy yoga together. She also teaches yoga in primary and secondary schools and some kindergartens when requested and looks forward to a regular class for children at the Bay School of Yoga in the near future.

Classes

We offer yoga classes for all ages and every level of flexibility and fitness.

BEGINNERS YOGA CLASSES
It is important to begin your yoga journey enjoyably and with ease. The Bay School of Yoga offers a three session program which will introduce you to the core aspects of yoga practice, comprehensively and safely.

POSTURE - “You are only as old as your spine”
This course will introduce the yoga principles behind good sitting, standing and lying postures, and awareness of how you can maintain flexibility and health of your spine.

BREATHING - “The breath of life”
You will learn traditional yoga pranayama (breathing techniques) that remind the body how to breathe deeply and effectively and which help to improve energy levels and sleep.

ASANA - Although there are literally thousands of yoga asana (or postures), they all derive from 10 foundational postures, which when practiced, stretch, strengthen and align the body. Over the three session course, each of these postures are explored with emphasis upon their benefits and their safe and appropriate practice. The 'Salute to the Sun' dynamic sequence is also taught, a practice which benefits the whole body and can be variously describes as the 'yogic aerobic' or a “Moving meditation.”

RELAXATION
“Yoga is the practice of stilling the mind in order to realise our true nature.”
You will experience the practice of deep relaxation which helps release tightness and tension of body and mind and begins the journey to the Self within - your innermost resting place.

Orientation Workshop on the first Sunday of every month 12.30 to 5.00pm - $95. Booking required, please check timetable for times available.

GENERAL YOGA CLASSES
For students who have considerable yoga experience, or who have completed our Beginner’s Course, we offer 9 general classes a week in both the daytime and evening.

Each class offers a FULL YOGA EXPERIENCE which extends the foundational practices and touches upon all eight aspects of the traditional yoga path.

Working with awareness and coordinated breathing, the body increases in flexibility and strength and the mind becomes more centered and at ease. Relaxation and the positive yoga philosophy and teachings are included in every class, making it more than 'just exercise'.

The benefits of these practices can be felt long after a class has finished!

10 x 75 minute classes - $185

FAMILY/CHILDREN YOGA CLASSES
A fun and safe way to introduce children to yoga. Mixing activity and stillness, sound and silence, fun and concentration, children can begin the journey of self awareness, self discipline and self knowledge.
