Bowen Bliss - Bowen Therapy

Bowen Therapy

The original Bowen Technique, is a gentle form of body work in which very subtle moves performed over the muscles and connective tissues send messages deep into the body, retrieving cellular memory of a preferred, relaxed, balanced way of wellbeing. Results can be remarkable even from the first session, often only a few sessions are needed to correct the presenting problem.

The technique addresses not only the musculoskeletal framework, but also the fascia, nerves and internal organs. The body’s intergrated response improves circulation and lymphatic drainage and aides in the assimilation of nutrients and elimination of toxins.

The bowen technique should be considered for:

  • backpain and sciatica
  • digestive and bowel problems including lBS
  • ear-ache, ear infections and migraines
  • fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome
  • knee, ankle and foot problems
  • menstrual and hormonal irregularities
  • neck/shoulder problems inc. frozen shoulder
  • groin, pelvic tilt and uneven leg length
  • respiratory problems and hay fever
  • RSI, carpel tunnel syndrome and tennis elbow
  • sports and accident injuries

What to expect in a session

Bowen sessions generally last from 15 to 45 minutes. The moves are gentle but purposeful and can be done through light clothing if the client prefers. Clients usually lie on a massage table, other bodywork table or bed, or can be seated in a chair, if required, for comfort. In a session that balances the entire body, the lower back is addressed first, then the upper back, and then the neck. To minimise the need for disturbing the client’s rest, all procedures that require the client to lie face down are completed before having them turn over for the procedures that are done face up. Some procedures may be done with the client sitting or standing.

A Bowen ‘session’ involves one or more ‘procedures’, each of which consists of several sets of ‘moves’. Between each set of moves, the practitioner pauses for as many minutes as are needed for the client’s body to begin responding. After the nervous system begins to adjust the tension level in the muscles, the client is ready for the next set of moves.

There are frequent but essential pauses through out the session that allows the body time to respond and begin the healing process. The practitioner can target a specific problem or address the body as a whole.

In contrast to other hands-on disciplines, where the practitioner imposes correction on the client through the technique performed, the Bowen technique allows the body to heal itself with minimal intervention. Because of the subtlety of Bowenwork and the body’s continuing response to it, other forms of manipulative therapy performed up to four days before, or five days after, a Bowen session may interfere with its effectiveness.
