Kanwal Bowen and Remedial Massage - Bowen Therapy
Focus areas
Bowen Therapy is a remedial, soft tissue form of bodywork, developed by the late Tom Bowen in the 1950’s in Geelong, Australia. Subtle moves are performed over muscles, tendons and ligaments sending messages deep into the body, triggering the body to begin a healing process.
After each set of moves there are pauses in the treatment. This is when the real healing begins. Your body needs time to assimilate the moves. It takes time for the signal coming from the treated area to reach the brain and return to the muscle, tendon or ligament to allow change to happen, enabling the muscle to relax, or whatever your body senses it needs to do to bring your body into balance. This all happens via the fascial network of the body.
The gentle moves and pauses in treatment allow the body to shift from the stressed, “fight or flight” mode to “rest and repair”. Your body relaxes and goes into parasympathetic dominance. You may fall asleep, or feel a deep sense of calm during the treatment.
The moves during a Bowen session are made along the myofascial lines, meridian lines and acupressure points. Heat, or sensations may be felt in entirely different parts of your body. Your body has its own innate healing ability and the Bowen moves start this process. Healing and changes in your body may continue for several days after treatment.
Can Bowen Therapy Help
Yes, Bowen Therapy is fantastic for everyone. It is appropriate for the young through to the elderly. It is great for newborn babies, pregnant women, sportspeople, the frail and anyone with pain, injury, stress or in need of relaxation.
Bowen Therapy is also a great maintenance therapy for chronic injury or pain. It takes time for an injury to become chronic, and by this time the body has started compensating by guarding that part of the body. This may bring further injury to opposing muscles in your body. It may take quite a few sessions to bring your body into balance.
A wide range of problems that usually respond well to Bowen Therapy include:
- Back pain and sciatica
- Knee, ankle and foot problems
- Neck/shoulder problems including frozen shoulder
- Groin pain, pelvic tilt and uneven leg length
- Respiratory problems and hay fever
- RSI, carpal tunnel syndrome and tennis elbow
- Digestive and bowel problems including IBS
- Fibromyalgia, Parkinson’s disease, MS
- Stress, Anxiety, Headaches
I recommend that you have 3 Bowen Therapy treatments, 7 to 10 days apart for a successful treatment. Although, in some cases, one treatment is only necessary when the injury is acute, or relatively new.
