Alexander technique lessons

Lessons in Alexander technique will teach you how to improve the way you move and function.

You will learn to use your body in a more efficient way which leads to:

better posture
reduced pain
greater strength, flexibility and mobility
improved breathing and vocal ability
reduced stress, strain and injury including relief from RSI and sporting injuries
ease during pregnancy and post-natally with caring for your baby
assistance with neurological disorders

Alexander technique is applicable to all activities and people of any age can use the technique to gain greater freedom and ease of movement.

When I feel it's necessary, I may introduce remedial massage assessment and techniques such as myofascial release and muscle energy techniques to Alexander technique students. Working with both modalities helps to build a bigger picture of your exact needs and allows me to thoroughly treat musculoskeletal dysfunctions.

Remedial Massage

Remedial massage provides relief from aches and pains. Remedial massages may involve a variety of techniques such as deep soft tissue manipulation, myofascial release, trigger point therapy or muscle energy techniques to help ease those knots and tight spots we all suffer from and lengthen and strengthen muscles.

Remedial massage will help to:

improve your posture
reduce trigger points and hypertonicity
create a more free and flexible body through muscular balance
reduce healing time after injury and prevent injury occuring
help with tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, carpal tunnel and other associated overuse injuries
provide stress relief
help with reducing headaches and migraines

Remedial massage and Alexander technique are very complementary to one another. Massage relieves tight muscles and fascia and Alexander technique teaches you how to manage and maintain a more free and flexible body through identifying habits of use which lead to poor posture, trigger points and hypertonicity.

Alexander technique and yoga

My yoga lessons bring the principles of the Alexander technique to the practice of yoga. The purpose of this is to help you to move into and out of poses in an efficient and effective way so that you get the most out of your yoga practice and can begin to move more fluidly and in better balance in all activities.

Together we will find poses that work for you, your body type, your strengths and weaknesses. As a remedial massage therapist I use my knowledge of the body’s musculature to determine which poses are suitable to help correct postural issues. I then use a hands-on approach to help you to bring Alexander technique to your practice, allowing you to move in a way which lengthens the spine and promotes a healthy spine.

Teaching yoga in this way makes my lessons suitable for all body types. I often work with those who have back, neck or limb pain and can tailor a program to meet your needs and help you achieve your goals. My yoga lessons are suitable for those recovering from injury and a remedial program can be developed that can help bring you back towards health, fitness, strength and suppleness.

Pregnant women may also find my lessons useful. You may wish to have greater ease and strength within your changing body to aid during birth and in the post natal period to readjust to your body and the demands arising from caring for your new baby.

Those who have never tried much exercise or yoga before will find my lessons useful in developing flexibility and strength, preventing injury and promoting increased body awareness. For people who are advanced in yoga, my lessons will improve your practice by enabling you to bring to it the principles of Alexander technique, put less stress on hyper flexible ligaments and joints and improve movement in those areas where you may be more inflexible.

No experience of Alexander technique is necessary for my yoga lessons.

About Me

After graduating from the 3 year full-time Alexander technique training course in Melbourne I was employed to open and run a centre for Alexander technique in Melbourne's CBD. I also applied Alexander technique to yoga and taught small classes with a strong hands on focus. I now work from Melbourne Combined Natural Therapies in Southbank, a multimodality clinic offering Alexander technique, remedial massage, myotherapy, chiropractic, yoga, laser therapy, dry needling and Chinese cupping..

I completed my Diploma in Remedial Massage which has expanded my knowledge of human physiology and anatomy and informed all aspects of my life, including my work as an Alexander technique teacher.

My own interests include keeping healthy and fit by cycling, resistance training, running and yoga. I have a passion for learning about how the human body moves and works and have made every effort to improve my skills by offering work exchanges with practitioners of other modalities. This has extended my knowledge of the human body, its ability to heal itself given the right help, the causes and effects of disease, pain and imbalances and given me insight into what other treatments and tools can be of benefit to my clients and give me the appropriate avenues for referral. I get a lot of satisfaction from my job and I look forward to sharing my skills and my passion with you very soon.
