This is an affordable service with most sessions attracting a generous Medicare rebate provided that you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan form your GP. The service offers convenient after hours consultation times and is centrally located close to major transport in the inner city area.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST

Nicki Gazis, PhD, MPsych (Clin), MAPS, is a specialist clinical psychologist and a Member of the Australian Psychological Society. She is currently working in the area of chronic disease management. Her previous work experiences include mental health and drug and alcohol misuse. As part of her PhD she studied drug and alcohol prevention among Indigenous and Non-Indigenous adolescents in Cairns. Her current research project is a group lifestyle change and weight management program for patients with Type 2 diabetes.

Therapeutic interventions include cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback relaxation, and interpersonal therapy.

In addition chronic physical health problems such as diabetes, coronary heart disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are often accompanied by poor psychological coping. The Medicare rebate covers disorders that often accompany a chronic illness such as:

CONSULTATION FEE

Fee: $150.00 per 55 minute session

Medicare Rebate: $124.50

PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE

If you have private health insurance with “extras” cover you may be entitled to a rebate. Claims can be made by taking your receipt to your insurer for payment.

HEALTH CARE CARD

If you have a Health Care Card and a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan, your sessions will be bulk-billed to Medicare.

MEDICARE

If you have been referred by your GP and have a Mental Health Treatment Plan, you will be eligible for a Medicare rebate. As of the 1 November 2011, you will be entitled to 6 individual sessions per calendar year with an additional 4 sessions under exceptional circumstances. In addition to the individual sessions and where group sessions are conducted, you may be entitled to a Medicare rebate for up to 12 sessions in any one calendar year. Fee payments and Medicare rebates can be processed on the spot with either a debit or credit card.
