Purpose Person-centred Anxiety Anger Abuse counselling Stress Management

I’m a Melbourne counsellor in private practice.

Being caring, confidential and non-judgemental underpin my approach to counselling and psychotherapy. Please feel free to contact me. I’m always happy to answer any questions you may have about our Melbourne Counselling and Psychotherapy services.

As a counsellor, I see all sorts of people with different things they want to work with. These include:
  • anxiety,
  • depression,
  • family relationships,
  • stress,
  • anger management,
  • work pressures,
  • substance abuse,
  • past traumas,
  • intimate relationships,
  • Sexual Abuse Counselling,
  • ...and more.
It is very common for people to seek a counsellor for problems like this.

My approach with working with nearly all of my clients is in two stages:
  1. 1. The counselling stage
In this stage we work with the immediate problems. The aim is:
    • to get you stabilised,
    • to reduce your symptoms, and,
    • to allow you to cope better.
  2. The psychotherapy stage
In this stage we start to look at the underlying causes. The aim is:
    • to get you back on your feet,
    • to give you greater resilience, and,
    • to allow you to develop and grow.
In practice, these two stages almost always happen together - we deal with the immediate problems at the same time that we look at their causes. My work is always guided by the needs of my client. The psychotherapy work is usually deeper and more longer term that the counselling work.

For new clients there is no fee for the initial consultation.

Counselling Style: I take a person-centred counselling approach. This relies on forming a genuine relationship, having unconditional positive regard for clients and demonstrating empathic understanding. I also draw from other counselling approaches such as existential psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Play therapy.

Why do I practice as a counsellor?: Throughout my professional and person life I have strived to ease the suffering of others. I find helping others to be very rewarding and it gives me a sense of meaning and purpose in my life. I feel extraordinarily privileged to hear about people’s experiences and to share in these during the counselling hour.

What personal qualities do I lend to the counselling relationship?: I bring to the counselling relationship a great deal of enthusiasm, respect and a sincere desire to help. I am a very relaxed person who is easy to talk to. At Chantel Ahearn Counselling I aim to provide a safe place for my clients to share personal things. Every client no matter their concern will always been shown respect and privacy.
