Gestalt Therapy
Gestalt Psychotherapy is an important branch of humanistic psychology derived from hermeneutics and phenomenology. It deals mainly with issues of perception and endeavours to make individuals more conscious of them and in turn will refine and heighten their skills of perception.
Gestalt = the essence or the shape of an entity’s complete form.
The primary basis of Gestalt Therapy is the Gestalt, more specifically the ‘incomplete gestalt’ – meaning that the psyche met with some resistance when looking to adapt to its environment, which prevented it from forming a ‘complete gestalt’. It is understood that unresolved relationships or unsettled conflicts may perhaps rear their heads over and over (often subconsciously) with troubling effects.
Through the reactivation of past emotional needs, as well as the perception of them in the present, the client’s self-healing powers can be revealed. Throughout the process, the counsellor/therapist will engage with you on a set of equal terms, entering into a ‘relationship’ with you in which he/she is willing to be (emotionally) affected. This encounter, which demands a high level of honesty and authenticity, is fundamental to Gestalt Psychotherapy.
