What is Pilates?
Pilates is a form of exercise that was developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s. Since then it has evolved into an exercise based system to enhance and promote core stability of the spine, increase range of motion and correct incorrect or faulty movements patterns and posture.
Who is Pilates for?
Pilates is appropriate for everybody and can be practiced by people of all levels, abilities and age. Pilates is a flexible system that is tailored and specific to individual needs making it easily adaptable to both the fitness/lifestyle and clinical setting.
Pilates is fundamentally offered in either studio or floor/mat work format.
Studio Pilates
Involves the utilisation of the particular Pilates equipment, for example, the reformer, trapeze table, wunda chair and ladder barrel. The equipment permits the breakdown of specific and functional movement patterns allowing us to isolate and work muscles specifically in a certain range.
Mat Work Pilates
Is a more generalised way of working with a group format of up to 8 on a floor based program for physio led classes or 12 for instructor led classes. Classes are graded according to ability or prior experience with Pilates and may utilise small equipment such as the magic circle, foam roller, resistance band or fit balls to add challenge and variety to exercise.
