About Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, non-invasive holistic natural therapy. It is beneficial in treating a wide range of conditions and can bring about profound healing at all levels: physical, mental, energetic and emotional. Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy takes a whole-person approach to healing and the inter-connectedness of mind, body and spirit are deeply acknowledged.

The underlying foundation of Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is a recognition of the “breath of life”. The art of the therapist is to connect with these underlying forces of health, facilitating a process of natural reorganisation. Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is deeply relaxing. It assists the body's natural healing processes, increasing physical vitality and well-being.

It aids in pain relief and encourages the nervous system, organs and musculoskeletal system to balance and heal. Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is client-led. This means that the individuals' system sets the pace at which the work progresses.

Breath of Life

Life expresses itself as motion. All living tissues of the body "breathe" with the motions of life, producing subtle, rhythmic impulses that can be felt under the sensitive hands of a trained therapist. At the core of the body, the cerebrospinal fluid, which bathes and cushions the brain and spinal cord, expresses this motion in a tide-like ebb and flow involving all the surrounding tissues and bones. All bones, organs and other structures of the body follow their own particular rhythms. These help to maintain balance and integrity throughout the entire body, distributing the healing and ordering properties of the "breath of life".

What is Biodynamic?

The smartest thing in the room is the intelligence expressed in our bodies. There are millions of years of evolution behind the shapes, forms and movements in the body. There are many coordinated self-regulating processes that respond to events and maintain an internal balance and flow. This intelligence defines the chemistry, nervous activity and alignment in the body.

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy experiences this intelligence as an expression of a wider ordering principle in nature. Health is an active principle; it is a living, breathing reality that can be felt by knowledgeable hands.

Biodynamics is an attempt to appreciate the whole of things and to engage with expressions of health. The work is about surrendering to the priorities of the body. There is a trust that, given the right relationship and with enough resources, the intelligence in the body will choose the best way to heal.

In Biodynamics we do not impose a plan from the outside. We listen and support the inherent striving of the organism away from fragmentation and towards health. Stillness is a defining goal and experience in the work. Change happens in the still moments where an individual comes back into relationship with themselves and to what is around them.

History of the development of Craniosacral Therapy

U.S. Osteopath Dr. William Garner Sutherland first recognized craniosacral motions and their relevance to health in the early 1900's. He went on to study the cranial system for 50 years. During the last 21 years of his life he trained many skilled osteopathic clinicians. In the 1970's Dr John Upledger was the first person to teach craniosacral therapy to non-osteopaths or medical staff. Franklyn Sills and the Karuna Institute teaching team have spent many years developing the biodynamic craniosacral model. Their work has created a number of other schools in the UK , USA , Spain , Switzerland , Germany , India , Japan , and more recently New Zealand and Australia.

The development of this therapy continues as more understanding is gained and new approaches and perspectives are adopted.

What to Expect in a Treatment Session

During a Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy treatment session the client typically lies or sits on a treatment table fully clothed. The practitioner will use a very light touch to “listen” to the body's intrinsic movements.

The practitioner will often begin the session by placing their hands lightly on the client's feet. From here the subtle movements and patterns of restrictions and ease may be felt. The practitioner may then move to other areas of the body, often to the sacrum at the base of the spine or to the shoulders or head. In "biodynamic" work the practitioner does not manipulate or adjust bones or tissue.

Throughout the session the client may feel a range of sensations such as tingling, buzzing, feelings of hot or cold. Sometimes the client may feel small movements or adjustments taking place, or sometimes, the client may feel nothing. Often a client will experience a deep sense of calm and relaxation or may sleep deeply. Any or all of the above is normal and welcomed as part of the healing process.

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy for Mothers and Babies

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy can help a woman's body adjust to the changes created by pregnancy. Treatments during the term of the pregnancy can also support the new mother to approach labour with strength, confidence and vitality. Working with mothers and babies postnatally can help with recovery from the the rigours of childbirth.

Babies respond very well to Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy and it is particularly beneficial to rebalance the whole body system within the first year. Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is extremely gentle and respectful to the baby, and recognises that babies are conscious and very aware.

Many babies experience strong compressive forces during birth, which can cause a contraction within their system. This can manifest as shock and trauma, leading to other conditions. If treated at this stage the birth trauma can be resolved before traumatic holding patterns become set within the physical body.

Testimonials

The following testimonials were received by individual PACT Members

"After many seasons suffering with sinusitis, I decided to try Biodynamic Craniosacral therapy. I was amazed that only after a few sessions with Michelle, the symptoms dramatically improved. With Michelle's understanding, experience and expertise, I was also able to 'unlock' many years of accumulated tension in my jaw, neck, shoulders, lower back and hips. A gifted practitioner, Michelle guided me through a healing process that enabled me to rediscover flexibility and release negative emotions that had trapped me in the past for way too long" - SP, ACT Australia

"Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is not well known but extremely effective. I do not fully understand the science behind it but that is irrelevant. What does matter is that it has given me a quality of life that I have not experienced in a long time, due to chronic lower back pain." - CB, ACT Australia

"I am so grateful to have discovered Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy and wish that I had found this modality a long time ago. I originally attended Michelle Driscoll's practice for pain in my shoulder and neck as a result of an injury. Typically my approach was on a single symptom basis. Very quickly I found that Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy addressed a wider range of symptoms that had also been bothering me. All my life I have suffered severe headache including regular migraines. Miraculously I have not experienced a single headache since my first appointment with Michelle, more than three months ago. I feel I am working in partnership with Michelle to 'unwind' years of stress. Each appointment has brought a sense that my body and mind are being integrated to allow healing to happen. Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy really works for me and without compromising my general health. So I am happy to make the investment in myself, and to recommend an appointment with Michelle, for anyone with constant pain." EY, ACT Australia
