Acupuncture

What to expect from an acupuncture treatment?

Acupuncture offers a drug-free and effective pain relief, which is reliable and fast.

A typical initial acupuncture session will last 90 min, it begins with a discussion of your problem and a physical examination, followed by the treatment session.

The acupuncturist may then stimulate certain points on the body, either by inserting the fine metal needles, using a laser or with muscles manipulation with Tuena or cupping.

The needles used in acupuncture are typically much finer than the needles used to take blood, and the process is usually painless.  The needles used are as fine as a thread of human hair, 10 could fit inside a typical hypodermic needle to take blood.

Once the needles are inserted, they will be left in place while you lie still, and hopefully relaxed for at least 20-40 min. As many as 20 needles may be used in one session.

The needles may be turned or twirled as part of the treatment, gently stimulated with a herb called moxibustion or with a fine soft electrical current – but not usually with the first treatment. The needles will be removed at the end of the session.

How to best prepare for your Acupuncture visit.

Clothing - Cloths worn should be loose fitting or easily removed. Please ensure underwear is also worn & bras easily unclasped for back treatments.

Meals – it is best to have eaten a meal before your treatment. As it is easy t become dizzy or nauseous when having a treatment on an empty stomach. It is best to not have caffeine right before a treatment.

Information – write a list or discuss your condition with a friend and then write the symptoms down.

Traditional Chinese Medicine views People as a whole. When presenting with many symptoms they usually show a detailed picture of where imbalances may occur and all information is important. Also write down question you might have, so you can get the most out of your visit.

Medications – it is very useful to have a list of medication and supplements being taken already written out, to maximize treatment time.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Chinese medicine treats the body as a whole. By using Traditional Chinese Medicine, we take the time with you, in a one-on-one consultation. This time we use techniques including extensive questioning into your health history, to design a treatment plan tailored for you.

Chinese Medicine views the human being as a whole being and recognizes every person has a unique health journey. We look at your life as a whole, your environment, diet, lifestyle and unique journey. If we reflect on the way we look at a tree, with its’ roots and branches. The Ancient concept of roots and branches considers that the root holds the tree to the ground and if the roots are not nourished and are weak then the branches will be weak and the leaves flowers and fruit will not flourish. If a tree is not planted in good soil then the roots cannot take hold.

In Chinese Medicine, we also look to the root of the health issue as well as looking at the manifestation of the weakness in the branches.

A good practitioner is able to diagnose and treat both the root and the branches in order to overcome any long-term chronic illness and allow the person to flourish as a healthy happy person with strong body and mind.
By using Traditional Chinese Medicine techniques including extensive questioning into your health history, a treatment plan is tailored for you.

Chinese medicine uses numerous forms of diagnosis. Dr. Koreny will ask to look at your tongue (please don’t scrub it before you arrive at the clinic, we are not embarrassed to see how the tongue looks.) The tongue reflects much of the inner workings of the body and allows your practitioner to have some insight into your internal state of health.

She will feel your pulse- in some ways, this is like a western doctor will do, however, in Eastern Medicine we are looking for so much more in regard to your inner health and present wellbeing. We look are at the number of beats per minute (although that is important). Our diagnosis goes much deeper.

Chinese Herbal medicine

The system of herbal medicine that developed in China differs in several significant ways from European herbal medicine. The most obvious difference is that the Western herbal tradition focuses on herbs taken by themselves for specific ailments.

In contrast, traditional Chinese herbal medicine makes almost exclusive use of herbal combinations. More importantly, these formulas are not designed to treat symptoms of a specific illness; rather, they are tailored specifically to the individual according to the complex principles of traditional Chinese medicine.

Herbal therapy is important in traditional Chinese medicine. It has been used for centuries in China, where herbs are considered fundamental therapy for many acute and chronic conditions. Like acupuncture, Chinese herbs can address unhealthy body patterns that manifest in a variety of symptoms and complaints. The aims of Chinese herbal therapy are to help you regain balance in your body and to strengthen your body’s resistance to disease. Chinese herbs may be used to:

  • Decrease cold/flu symptoms
  • Increase your energy
  • Improve your breathing
  • Improve digestion
  • Improve your sleep
  • Decrease pain
  • Improve menopausal symptoms
  • Help regulate menstrual cycles (if infertility is an issue)

Chinese herbal medicines are mainly plant-based, but some preparations include minerals or animal products. They can be packaged as raw dried herbs, powders, pastes, lotions or tablets, depending on the herb and its intended use. At this clinic, we focus on the plant-based aspect.

Each herbal preparation has health benefits but differs with costs, preparation times & strength.

At the Grafton Acupuncture Clinic, we use Prepared Granular herbs.  Each Herbal extract has been prepared to extract the best from each herb and is usually 5-10x the concentration of the raw dried herb from.  It is delivered in a personalised herbal formulation, is easy to prepare & comes in an easy travel parcel.

Can I buy Chinese medicine at my local chemist?

There maybe be formulations at your chemist labelled as "Chinese medicine", but a qualified Chinese Medicine practitioner will never use a one-size-fits-all for their patients. A fully qualified practitioner will prescribe a Chinese herbal formula uniquely formulated for your condition. The herbal formula is also adjusted and altered during the recovery phase until the desired health result is achieved.

A lot of diseases or illnesses present with a core set of recognisable indications and symptoms; the original presentation of a particular disease or illness may differ from person to person. For this reason, people with similar health conditions may be provided with considerably different Chinese herbal medicine prescriptions.

Cupping

What is cupping?

Cupping is a type of complementary therapy that is believed to have originated in China thousands of years ago. It has been used in many cultures through Europe and the west for hundreds of years.

Chinese medicine philosophy believes that where there is pain and stagnation the essence of dis-ease arises. By removing the stagnation, pain is relieved and healing takes place.

Congestion and stagnation consist of qi, phlegm, blood, lymph and vital fluids. Imbalances occur when there is obstruction and therefore, cupping is used to draw out toxins, move stagnation and restore the free flow of energy and fluids.

Cupping increases blood circulation to the area where the cups are placed. This may relieve muscle tension, which can improve overall blood flow and promote cell repair. It may also help form new connective tissues and create room for the new blood vessels in the tissue.

It is extremely common to have bruise-like markings where the cups have been however, they are not painful and disappear within 5-10 days of treatment.

Cupping is deeply relaxing and Painless a painless experience with significant effects on the nervous system, organ, muscle and tissue levels. Cupping is used to sedate the nervous system, treat migraines, muscle pain, digestive disorders, viruses, rheumatism, skin and circulatory disorders.

Traditionally cupping involved using bamboo or glass cups placed on the skin to create suction. The suction was primarily created through the use of heat. The cups were originally heated with fire and then applied to the skin. As they cooled, the cups drew the skin inside. Cupping therapy is one of the best deep-tissue therapies available and it is frequently used after acupuncture, bloodletting, or plum blossom treatment.

Modern cupping is often performed using glass or plastic cups that are rounded like balls and open on one end. Suction is achieved by either heating up the air inside the cup or by creating a vacuum with a suction pump.

There are two main categories of cupping performed today:

  • Dry cupping is a suction-only method.

  • Wet cupping may involve both suction and controlled medicinal bleeding.

Your practitioner, your medical condition, and your preferences will help determine what method is used.

What should you not do after cupping?

For 4-6 hours post cupping, avoid exposure to:

  • 1.    Caffeine, alcohol, sugary foods and drinks, dairy, and processed meats. These foods slow down your body's ability to process the treatment.

  • 2.    Hot showers, saunas, hot tubs and strong air conditioning.

  • 3.    Intense exercise.

  • 4.    Cold and windy conditions.

What my cupping marks tell me:
