What are the differences between Counselling & Psychotherapy?

I have trained in both counselling and psychotherapy and there are many areas in which they overlap. In short, the difference between them is that counselling focuses more on specific current problems or goals and tends to be short-term, whereas psychotherapy works towards lasting changes at a deep level and tends to be long-term.

If you're not sure whether Counselling or Psychotherapy is what you need, please contact me to organise an initial consultation, where we can discuss what you would like to focus on and gain from the sessions.

Who Can Benefit From Psychotherapy or Counselling?

I specialise in individual work with adults who are experiencing or have experienced:
  • Difficulties during life transitions
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Existential questions
  • Grief / bereavement
  • Depression / anxiety
  • Trauma / abuse
  • Low self-esteem
I can also assist individuals who are looking to:
  • Increase their self-awareness
  • Improve their quality of relationships
  • Continue their personal growth

Psychotherapy or Counselling is tailored to your individual needs, making each session unique to your personal situation.

My approach

I work from an Integrative Relational Transactional Analysis (TA) perspective. This is a ‘two-person approach’, meaning that we will work together to understand the conscious and unconscious dynamics in your relationships and in your way of being in the world. We will be actively engaged in finding more mindful and authentic ways of relating with each other.

Increased self-awareness and having new ways of relating to yourself and others gives you more options for responding to your environment, e.g. consciously having a choice of behaviours, thoughts and feelings instead of automatically repeating the familiar ones.

The Integrative Relational TA approach integrates psychodynamic, humanistic and cognitive behavioural theory as well as current research outcomes in interpersonal neurobiology, human development and mindfulness. It is holistic in terms of working with the whole person: mind, emotions, body and spirit, and it takes into account your history, culture, family, work and social environments.
