ACUPUNCTURE SERVICES

Acupuncture is a skill tool of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is applied in many different ways and not all Acupuncturists apply this skill in the same manner. Acupuncture treatment results for the same ailment can vary greatly from one practitioner to another depending on their training, technique aplplication and sometimes years of practice.

Many people think of acupuncture as a physical therapy indicated for musculo-skeletal or pain conditions, however it can be used for a wide range of conditions like Fertility and Pregnancy support, Digestive complaints, Emotional & Stress support and Cancer support.

However, TCM’s sophisticated understanding of internal conditions means acupuncture can be successfully used as part of treatment for a range of conditions including:

    • Digestive

    • Emotional

    • Reproductive

    • Respiratory

    • Immune & other health problems.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

The use of Acupuncture and herbal formulas stimulate the flow of intrinsic energy, Chi, in the body which, in turn, enhances health and benefits organ function. Acupuncture is the gentle stimulation of specific points on the body to restore the flow of Chi, to bring about balance, well being, deep relaxation and to correct health problems.

From a Chinese Medicine point of view, the body is understood in terms of energy circuits. The circuits, (channels of energy or meridians) are like an energetic map of your body. Along the pathway of these circuits, the energy is constantly changing, creating areas of highly specialised energy that can be used to influence the energy balance of the entire system.

Effects of Acupuncture

The effects of acupuncture could be thought of as stimulating the body’s integrative regulatory systems and turning on a variety of neurological and endocrine mechanisms, which in turn stimulate a variety of physiologic functions towards homeostasis

Acupuncture has the following specific actions:

    • It initiates neurological, immunological, and endocrine responses

    • It removes energy blockages

    • Reduces pain and inflammation

    • Tonifies and strengthens blood and enhances oxygenation in tissues

    • Raises natural endorphin levels

    • Enhances mental clarity

    • Relaxes muscles and ligaments

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

In Acupuncture, the needle (almost hair thin) is tapped in through a guiding tube so you barely feel it going in. At their first treatment, most first timers are pleased to exclaim “that didn’t hurt at all”.

Laser (cold) stimulation to acupuncture points can also be applied for a range of conditions or for those who are uncomfortable with nedles.

CUPPING SERVICES

Cupping is an ancient Chinese therapeutic technique

This is a method of stimulating acupuncture points by applying suction through a glass jar, in which a partial vacuum has been created. The reduced pressure within the cups draws the skin up into it. Cupping is a highly effective treatment for reducing pain or congestion. People often notice an immediate difference after treatment.

How Does It Work?

Cupping affects the body’s tissue up to four inches deep and is thought to be the best form of deep tissue massage available and is a method which is safe and reliable for most people. The suction or vacuum required for cupping is most commonly created by a flame (heat) or pump.

Cupping is applied for one or all of the following reasons:

    • To enable the tissue to release toxins

    • To clear blockages

    • Activate the lymphatic system

Why Try Cupping?

In TCM it is used to warm the qi (Chi), to clear the dampness from the body, and reduce stagnation and swelling.

In TCM theory, cupping therapy can open up the meridian channels which have become blocked through stagnation and therefore enable the life energy to flow freely throughout the body and through all organs and tissues.

Cupping helps pull the blood out of the area to the to be dispersed, making room for fresh, oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood. It can replenish the tissues and accelerate the healing process. It draws stagnant qi from deep within to the surface to be released, so easing pain.

What Can It Help Treat?

It is used to treat the following:

    • Treat coughs and tightness or congestion in the chest.

    • Relieve fluid from the lungs in chronic bronchitis

    • Musculoskeletal pain, (low backache, sprains, soft tissue injuries)

What Happens During a Consultation?

Commonly static cups are left in place for five to 15 minutes, and when removed, they usually leave a round red bruise behind. Bruising occurs in spots where congestion existed. Bruises can take several days to go away and the areas may feel as if they were sunburned for a short while.

Thousands of years of ongoing practice has proven that the temporary marks are a small price to pay for the relief the therapy provides.
