Welcome to Fivedock Counselling

and All of us have times in our lives when we feel that life is too much of a challenge and all things seem difficult. It may be difficult to find your way out, or change direction. Possibly you do not know what to do as this is a new experience for you. Times like this can feel confusing, even frightening. You may be asking yourself what is happening to me? Why is this happening in my life? For some, it can be an all too familiar pattern. It happens again and again and you start to wonder if: is this my fault?
Maybe you think it is just the way you are and there is nothing you can do. Or there may have been a specific event that has caused you to feel unable to cope.

Who says that you have to cope all of the time?

Sometimes we just need the time and space to be heard. Now and again we need help to clarify our own thoughts. Occasionally the past can simply overtake any chance for a future. At times, even if you’ve already spoken to a doctor and received treatment, medication alone doesn’t solve the problem.

This is where counselling or psychotherapy can help.

Seeing a counsellor gives you the chance to share the problem with someone who can provide a caring and safe environment in which to explore your options. Seeking help from a counsellor is not a sign of weakness or an admission of failure. It’s actually the opposite. It’s a sign that you have the strength and good sense to get help when you most need it.

What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

Counselling and psychotherapy are talking-based therapies which work through the relationship between you and the therapist to help you develop a greater understanding within and about yourself and perhaps to make some changes in your life.
As a trained counsellor I have developed many skills. One of the most important skills I possess to assist you is LISTENING. I listen without judgement or pre-determined ideas. When you really feel you have been heard and understood, a crucial aspect of the counselling process is underway.

Professional counselling usually refers to shorter-term treatment for a particular issues or concerns. These may involve an individual, couple, or family.
Issues and dilemmas that are suitable for counselling include:

  • Relationships- couples and marriages and same sex relationships
  • Workplace issues- career goals and direction, and workplace challenges
  • Stress
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Grief and loss including loss of animals and pets
  • Aged care issues, placement of a parent or relative
  • Lifestyle choices
  • Any issue that is causing you concern.

In counselling you will be assisted to develop options, explore strategies and increase self awareness and how you interact with others. Communication and decision making will result in more effective outcomes and choices in your life.

Psychotherapy usually refers to longer-term treatment for more complex issues that are having a negative effect on a person’s life. Often the current issue or difficulty is rooted back in childhood or young adulthood. As a psychotherapist I will work with you to explore the issue in safe and caring environment. This often results in insight being gained and a new understanding develops within your-self. You then have the option to choose how to deal with the issue in your current life. You will be supported to explore options and strategies so as to alleviate the distress and blocks in your life. The therapeutic relationship between yourself and the psychotherapist is crucial to effective work.

How it works.

One of my strongest beliefs is that every person is unique. I therefore work closely with you to select the most appropriate and self-empowering approach for you. I understand irrespective of the source of the pain, it is important to experience the pain and hurt. Often there are unwelcome issues and conversations that arise, however you will be safe and cared for. Often from adversity can come the greatest learning for us that occurs in life.

Testimonials

I have been seeing Wendy for a while now and she has been great. I have been able to discuss issues that I would never have spoken to anyone else. She has helped me get through my break-up, control my anxiety and just to cope with life.

I would not be where I am today if it wasnt for her support.

So dont be afraid to take the first step in getting some counselling, I was but I have no regrets.

TT- Fivedock. NSW.

Hi have been seeing Wendy for a few months.

She has helped me see that.I can control my life by controlling my my temper and not to be so angry and short with my family, to take time to explain how it makes me feel..

Wendy has been very helpful and always listens and understands. Wendy also is flexible with her appointments and always tries to fit me in!
