Addiction is the unhealthy uncontrollable attachment to a person, substance or process that promises heaven and delivers hell. If an individual seeks their happiness through such means in compulsive, repetitive ways despite negative consequences, then that individual may be in the tight grip of addiction. Addiction can be genetically inherited and usually activated by dysfunctional habits or a possible attempt to defend against abuse, repress untreated trauma or medicate uncomfortable feelings.

Relationships with Self

Your relationship with yourself is vital to developing a happy, healthy purposeful life. So how are you meant to create a healthy and positive relationship with yourself? Much in the same way that you create a relationship with another person– through effective communication and dialogue. Your dialogue with yourself is what we call ‘self-talk’. It is often an internal dialogue, although it can be expressed in writing. The more loving your self-talk the better your relationship with yourself. It must be honest and brave but always kind and full of goodness.

Relationships with Others

The loving self-dialogue and communication is extended to loving communication with other people, in an atmosphere of compromise and mutual respect. A healthy relationship is paradoxically the forum for achieving your optimal potential as an individual as well as humbling yourself in the spirit of compromise for another person – for to give and receive are one in truth.
