Clinical nutrition is the study of the relationship between food and a human body. More specifically, it is the science of nutrients and how they are digested, absorbed, transported, metabolised, stored, and eliminated by the body. Besides studying how food works in the body, nutritionists are interested in how the environment affects the quality and safety of foods, and what influence these factors have on health and disease.

Clinical Nutrition examines the relationship between diet and health. It is far more than counting calories or following the Australian Food Guide recommendations. Dietary advice specific to your unique condition and history, and supplemental recommendations to treat the cause. This may includes replating deficiencies, doing oral chelation or detoxification, targeting symptoms with the latest research, or recommending maintenance vitamins and minerals.

What is clinical nutrition good for?
Studies show that eating habits play a major role in the development of certain chronic diseases, including heart disease, obesity, cancer, and diabetes. Making changes to your diet can help to both prevent and treat these conditions. For example, lowering certain fats and cholesterol and adding whole grains to your diet can help prevent atherosclerosis (plaque build up in the arteries), which can lead to heart disease or stroke. Eat fewer calories will help you lose weight. Cutting down on simple sugars (glucose, sucrose, fructose, and lactose) can help prevent diabetes, and diets high in fibre (especially soluble fiber) can help control diabetes.

Nutritional Supplements

The term "nutritional supplement" refers to vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that are used to support good health and treat illness. While it's always best to get nutrients through the foods you eat, sometimes taking a supplement can help. For example, taking zinc supplements has been reported to shorten the duration of the common cold and lower the incidence of acute diarrhoea in children.

Nutrients are substances that the body needs to live and grow. The body requires about 92 nutrients including 60 minerals, 16 vitamins, 12 essential amino acids (building blocks for protein), 3 essential fatty acids and water. Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats – called macronutrients – are broken down (metabolised) to provide energy. Vitamins and minerals – called micronutrients – are not used for energy themselves, but are needed to help macronutrients be used for energy. Water helps to regulate body temperature, transport nutrients to cells, and rids the body of waste materials.

How do vitamins and minerals work?
Vitamins and minerals play an essential role in the body's normal metabolism, growth, and development. For example, while a vitamin is not a source of energy by itself, it can provide the key the body needs to unlock energy stored in food. Some vitamins and minerals work together, such as the mineral zinc and vitamin A. Zinc enables the body to use vitamin A to promote good vision. Another example is calcium and vitamin D. Calcium, which is very important in bone and heart health, is more readily absorbed if vitamin D is also present.

Combining a healthy diet with regular exercise and positive mental attitude has been shown to be the best way for a healthy lifestyle. A clinical nutritionist can help you determine what type of diet is best for you. Our food needs are influenced by many factors, including age, gender, body size, pregnancy, and health state.

Iridology

Iridology is the study of the 'Iris' of the eye - the exposed nerve endings which make up the coloured part of the eye and which are connected to the brain. The iris reveals changing conditions of every part of the organ of the body. Through various marks, signs and discolouration in the iris, nature reveals inherited weaknesses and strengths. Iridology cannot detect a specific disease however it can tell an individual if they have over or under activity in specific areas of the body. Iridology is generally safe, non-invasive and painless. It is not a treatment therapy but rather a diagnostic tool used to detect underlying signs of developing disease.

Iridology helps the patient learn about their strengths and weaknesses and become more aware of what they can do to help themselves. The Iridologist will guide the patient as to the best ways of reversing existing conditions and managing genetic weaknesses. A trained Iridologist sees the exposed nerve endings as a 'map', revealing information about:

The body's genetic strengths and weaknesses
Levels of inflammation and toxic overload
The efficiency of the eliminative systems and organs

The Iridologist will examine your eye by making photographs of the iris with a specially designed camera. The examination and consultation should generally last an hour.

Reflexology

Reflexology is a treatment where the therapist works primarily on your feet. The theory behind reflexology is that there are "reflex points" in the feet, hands and ears that relate to specific organs and glands in the body. Stimulating those reflex points promotes health in that organ via the body's energetic pathways. Reflexology is a deeply relaxing treatment with benefits that can be felt throughout the body.

Reflexology may help with:

      Stress-related conditions
      Back Pain
      Migraine
      Fertility
      Sleep disorders
    Hormonal Imbalances

Chinese Manipulation

Chinese manipulation (Tui Na) massage is an ancient healing art of Traditional Chinese Medicine which has been practiced in China for over 4000 years. The name Tui Na comes from "Tui" meaning "push" and "Na" meaning "Grasp". It is used to treat conditions that in western medicine ordinarily would require physiotherapists, a chiropractor and an osteopath.

Tui Na not only works on the muscles and joints, but also at a deeper level, affecting the flow of vital life energy in the body. This 'life energy' is referred to as "Qi" (pronounced "chee") and flows through the whole universe as the activating force for all life. Qi flows through channels in the body called "Meridians". Meridians supply Qi energy to the organs, body tissues and mind. Tui Na applies pressure to the Meridians and specific points thus helping the flow of Qi through the body. Traditional Chinese Medicine always views disease as an imbalance in the flow of Qi.

When your Qi flow is balanced you feel confident and energetic as it affects you emotional, intellectual, spiritual and physical well being. After Tui Na treatment, the patient will most often feel energised, happy and enlivened, however it can also release blocked emotional energy. This may result in the patient feeling emotional afterwards. Tui Na is regarded as a very safe therapy; however there are times when Tui Na is not suitable for patients. Tui Na is not to be used on:

Children under the age of 5 (their meridian systems have not fully developed and a different technique is used)
      People with brittle bones (osteoporosis)
People with serious heart disease or cancer
The hip area where an artificial joint is fitted
      Inflamed or broken skin
Lower back or abdomen during pregnancy

Lymphatic Drainage

Manual lymphatic drainage is a very gentle massage technique used to stimulate the flow of lymphatic fluid ('lymph') - around the body. It is not a muscular massage but a harmonious manual treatment using light, rhythmical pressure to stimulate lymph vessels and nodes, most of which lie just below the skin, to assist the body to drain the excess fluid and wastes that accumulate in a sluggish lymphatic system.

The lymphatic system is a complex network of vessels and nodes which is responsible for the filtering and removal of excess fluid, metabolic waste, toxins and bacteria in order to cleanse or 'detox' the body. It is also an essential part of the immune system, producing immune cells which fight off harmful bacteria and viruses and destroy abnormal cells.

The lymphatic system can become congested as a result of infections, toxins, stress, inactivity and poor diet among other things. By promoting fluid circulation and decongesting the lymph nodes, manual lymphatic drainage helps boost the immune system and detoxify the body. Manual lymphatic drainage can benefit conditions such as; detoxification, skin complaints, fluid retention, weight gain, pre and post surgery and sporting injuries.

Lymphatic drainage is also highly recommended for those prone to and recovering from; sore throats, colds, infections, on-going tiredness, low immunity, swollen nodes and is also beneficial for the physically inactive and for general health maintenance.

.............................................................

Detoxification

Detoxification is about resting, cleansing and nourishing the body from the inside out. By removing and eliminating toxins, and then feeding your body with healthy nutrients, detoxification can help protect you from disease and renew your ability to maintain optimum health.

A detox program can help the body's natural cleansing process by:

      Resting the organs through fasting
Stimulating the liver to drive toxins from the body
Promoting elimination through the intestines, kidneys and skin
      Improving circulation of blood
Refuelling the body with healthy nutrients.

We detox in order to prevent symptoms such as:

      Unexplained fatigue
      Sluggish elimination
      Irritated skin
      Allergies
      Low-grade infections
      Bags under the eyes
      Bloated stomach
      Menstrual difficulties
      Lack of concentration
    Mental confusion

Infant Massage

Baby massage can provide so many wonderful benefits, not only to infants, but also to the family unit. Massage releases endorphins and can assist in relieving discomfort associated with teething, chest and sinus congestion, colic, wind, constipation and reflux.

Most babies sleep for longer periods following massage and have longer periods of deep sleep.
Benefits of infant massage:

Speeds brain and nervous system development
      Aids relaxation and reduces crying
Helps tone muscles and aids growth
      Aids digestion and deepens respiration
Teaches infants that touch is a form of expression and assists with the development of coordination and balance
Increases body awareness and strengthens the immune system
      Enhances the bonding process
Can help older siblings bond with their new brother or sister

Research has shown that adults (parents, grandparents) who provide massage to infants experience less anxiety, fewer depressive symptoms, improved mood, decreased stress levels and improved self-esteem.

We teach parents to interpret an infant's body language in regards to massage. By respecting a child's rejection of touch, you are teaching your baby that they deserve respect when it comes to making decisions about who touches their body and that it is "ok" to say "no" if you don't want to be touched.

Paediatric Massage Consultancy

PM consultants provide presentations to professional groups (hospital staff, natural therapists, early childhood centre staff, etc). This ensures that up to date information is available on infant massage to a wide range of health professionals who work directly with new families.

Health & Wellbeing

Eating a balanced diet is a major factor in a healthy lifestyle. Your body requires more than 40 nutrients for energy, growth and tissue maintenance. Water, as the most plentiful component in the body, is also crucial to survival. It is the medium for bodily fluids, and it transports nutrients into cells and carries waste products and toxins out.

In our busy lives, we are losing our connection with nature and forgetting the importance of fresh air, clean water and regular gentle exercise to keep us happy and well.

Healthy food is good medicine and a poor diet will reduce your body's capacity to function efficiently. Eating better can have a dramatic impact on your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, as well as your resistance to disease.
