What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a form of ‘hands-on’ therapy originating in the United States in the late 1800’s. Since then the profession has quickly gained recognition all over the world and in Australia is the fastest growing form of manual medicine. With an emphasis on treating the body as an interconnected unit made up not only of a bony skeleton with its associated muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons, but also an internal system of organs, blood supply and nerves, the Osteopathic approach is an intelligent and effective method of healing.
Why see an Osteopath?
Osteopaths are highly trained to diagnose and treat problems affecting the musculoskeletal system such as;
- neck pain, headaches, migraines, jaw pain
- back pain
- chest/rib pain
- shoulder pain, elbow pain, wrist and hand pain
- hip, knee, ankle and foot pain
- injuries from falls, incorrect lifting, motor vehicle/bike accidents
- sports injuries
- pregnancy related and post-partum complaints
- arthritic pain
- work-related overuse and postural conditions
What to expect when you see an Osteopath?
A full case history is taken including the reason for your visit and also your previous medical history to enable your Osteopath to get a full understanding of your current and previous levels of health. The Osteopath will then observe your posture by asking you to stand before taking you through various movements to test your body’s range of motion and investigate the cause of your problems. It is therefore advisable to wear comfortable loose fitting clothing for your appointment. Osteopathic treatment consists of a broad range of techniques including muscle stretching, muscle trigger point release, myofascial release, joint articulation, and joint manipulation and is tailored to each individual according to their presenting complaint. Your Osteopath also takes an overall interest in your health including diet, exercise and lifestyle and will give you advice and or exercises to help complement your treatment.
