Acupuncture is one of the oldest and most largely used medical methods in the world, originating 3,500 years ago in China. There are over 2000 acupuncture points in the entire human body that interconnect with 14 pathways, that we call meridians. Chinese medicine practitioners strong believe that these meridians conduct and channel energy, or Qi, between the surface of the body and the internal organs inside the body. QI is able to regulate emotional, spiritual, mental and physical balance. When the flow of Qi is blocked or disrupted, as a result of poor health habits or external circumstances, pain and/or disease can come about. Acupuncture works to restore the normal flow of this energy.

The aim of acupuncture is to stimulate the body, remove energy blockages, and re-establish balance, thus enhancing the body’s intrinsic ability to heal itself. In the last 4 decades, Western and Chinese studies have highlighted that the insertion of needles on specific acupuncture points assists in the release of chemical neurotransmitters in the body, including endorphins.

Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of sterile, fine needles into specific areas along the body’s meridians to remove any energy blockages and enhance the normal flow of qi through the body. The practitioner may additionally stimulate the acupuncture points utilising other methods, including cupping, moxibustion, laser therapy, electro-stimulation and massage, in order to re-establish the flow of qi.
