Did you know that balancing your body's vital life force is essential for disease prevention and optimal health? Acupuncture treatments at Healthful Women's Wellness Clinic in Glenelg, South Australia, can assist you in accomplishing this and more.

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture helps to stimulate specific points on your body with acupuncture needles or pressure, allowing the body to heal by removing obstructions in the flow of energy.

Acupuncture points, according to traditional Chinese medicine, are located along the meridian pathways that carry your body's vital energy. This energy is referred to as "qi" or "chi."

Acupuncture can be used to treat or support a variety of conditions, including:

  • Gut health
  • Headaches & migraines
  • Muscle pain
  • Sprains
  • Sciatica
  • Fertility & IVF support
  • Dental pain
  • TMJ
  • Morning sickness
  • Inducing labour
  • Anxiety
  • Grief
  • Trauma
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Nausea resulting from chemotherapy

How does acupuncture work?

An acupuncturist will assess your health before determining your needs and the best way to help you. After that, you will be given a few minutes to remove your top and cover up. Then you will be asked to lie down on a massage table; depending on where the needles are to be inserted, you may be asked to lie down on your front, back or one side. Your therapist may perform some cupping prior to beginning treatment.

One or more thin, sterile needles will be inserted by your therapist. The acupuncturist will use new sterile, single-use needles.

Does acupuncture hurt?

You may feel a brief stinging or tingling sensation as each needle is inserted. Most people experience very little pain; however, if the body is inflamed, you may experience more pain.

What is cosmetic acupuncture?

Do you want glowing, plump skin without the chemicals? Facial and cosmetic acupuncture is increasingly replacing abrasive and toxic treatments. Cosmetic acupuncture can help with skin problems, such as acne, as well as firming up the skin. Contact us for more information about the treatment times and requirements.

What exactly are cupping and moxibustion?

Cupping goes back thousands of years and uses glass spheres and heat to create suction. It is intended to bring blood to the surface, thus relieving inflammation and improving blood flow and relaxation.

Moxibustion is a complementary Chinese medicine practice to acupuncture. It is done by burning mugwort herbs and holding them over the acupuncture points.

What can you expect after an acupuncture session?

You will most likely feel fantastic after your first treatment, but you may also feel slightly tired. We recommend that you rest and drink plenty of water because your body has gone through some amazing changes. Your therapist may also advise you on self-care and complementary therapies such as Chinese herbs, tinctures or supplements.

How many sessions do I have to attend?

Some health problems may respond quickly to a single treatment, but if the issue is acute or chronic, it may take some time to resolve. Most people maintain their acupuncture appointments on a regular basis to ensure their bodies receive the support they need for long-term wellness.

Why is an initial consultation so lengthy?

During your initial consultation, your therapist will get to know you, understand your health issues and tailor a treatment plan to your individual needs. Your therapist will interview you about your current and previous health issues, lifestyle, appetite, allergies, sleep habits, pain and menstrual cycle.
