Pilates for Expectant and New Mums

At Health Point Physiotherapy we see a lot of women before, during and after pregnancy.

Our Pilates for Expectant and New Mums program is designed specifically to help you while you prepare for pregnancy, care for you while you are pregnant and help you get back to normal after giving birth.

The physiotherapists at Health Point have a wealth of experience in this area and will make sure that all exercises are safe and specifically tailored to your needs during this exciting time. Prior to commencing Pilates you will undergo our unique Full Body Assessment. All your sessions will be fully supervised. You will also receive a FREE home exercise program.

If you are not yet pregnant or already gave birth we will use Real Time Ultrasound to assess your core muscles.

When is the best time for me to start Pilates?

It's always best to start before you are pregnant. That way when you do get pregnant your body will be better prepared to meet the challenges of pregnancy. However even if you are already pregnant you can still commence Clinical Pilates. The latest you can start is 24 weeks for those of you who were not exercising regularly prior to pregnancy and 36 weeks if you had a good exercise routine before. Always get clearance from your obstetrician or GP first.

Mastitis

If you ever had mastitis you'll be familiar with the symptoms - the breasts generally become tender to touch, lumpy, red and heavy.

At Health Point we have successfully helped many women completely resolve these symptoms without the use of antibiotics. In fact, unless you have infectious mastitis, caused by a bacterial infection, antibiotics will not help you. The more common type of mastitis is non-infectious, caused by a blocked milk duct.

What is the treatment used?

  • We use Ultrasound, which is clinically proven and totally safe, to unblock the duct
  • Only 1-3 treatment sessions are required
  • Results seen immediately after the very first session

Incontinence and Pelvic Floor Strengthening

Incontinence can affect women of any age group. The good news is that it can be fixed. Margarita Gurevich, the Senior Physiotherapist at Health Point Physiotherapy, has helped many women successfully treat their incontinence and regain their independence.

Most women start to see results within the first few sessions.

How can Health Point Physiotherapy help me?

  • On your first session we will perform a thorough pelvic floor assessment which will form the basis for your program
  • We use Real Time Ultrasound to assess your core and pelvic floor muscles - you get to see on the screen how the muscles work
  • Regular reassessments using Real Time Ultrasound are performed
  • We look at other factors which may be contributing to the problem, such as your diet
  • Where necessary we use electrotherapy to help you get results
  • You will receive a FREE home exercise program
  • Your exercises are progressed each session until they carry over into your everyday life
  • We will be in regular contact with your GP unless you don't want us to

Osteoporosis and Pilates for 50+ Year Old's

As we get older we become more at risk of developing osteoporosis. We may also notice that we can no longer exercise in the same way we could when we were younger.

Health Point Physiotherapy has extensive experience in supporting women, as they get older, continue exercising in a challenging yet safe way.

Clinical Pilates is one of the best forms of exercise - it can be made really gentle or quite hard, depending on your individual needs and abilities. The physiotherapists at Health Point Physiotherapy will make sure that each session meets your needs and that you are fully supervised. If you are not a fan of Pilates we will gladly design a specialized program for you to do at home.
Other good types of exercise for preventing osteoporosis and maintaining an active lifestyle include walking and swimming.
