About Me - Jan Ashton-Ross
I’m passionate about integrating our scientific knowledge about nutrition with things we have known either instinctively or from traditions passed down over generations. I am a qualified Naturopath, Nutritionist and Herbal Medicine practitioner with Post Graduate qualifications in Mental Health Nutrition. I aim to blend ’scientific research with a holistic approach’ so that people can take on board technical information at a level that suits them.
I aim to reduce my footprints where-ever I go, whether walking in the bush or living as I do in a bustling city.
I get great pleasure by helping people have insight into ‘what they can do’ to help themselves.
Despite all my studies my interest in learning continues and I am often amazed at the complexity of ”our world – our body”.
I enjoy talking with people and am looking forward to stretching my theories into the world of research regarding the Gastro-intestinal tract and the link with virus’s and on going poor health. My post-grad studies in mental health nutrition have helped me consolidate experience in my clinic where people have the “never well since I had…” complaint.
As well as being ‘in my clinic’ I am currently lecturing at Endeavour College – giving a helping hand to the brains of the Naturopathic and Nutrition practitioners of the future.
In 2012 I presented a seminar for Biomedica for Australia and New Zealand practitioners on my theories regarding links between The Gut, the brain and the thyroid. I am currently researching and working on my next webinars about “complexity of virus’s and “stuff”.
Nutrition is my first love and through understanding its chemistry I can use strategic supplementation and food. This knowledge helps me understand why so many of our traditional herbs, including those used in our kitchens, have a place in the well being of our bodies.
I wish I had a better understanding about indigenous foods and medicines - I am sure Australian bush plants hold many secrets. The story of ‘plant based medicine’ is just starting to be scientifically told, although some of our common medicines, including aspirin, come from plants that have been used for generations.
I’d love to think we can balance our world, sustain communities, protect virgin rainforest and landscapes so that plants can be part of the future of medicine. So if I inspire someone to think a little about the fact that some of our most powerful medicines come from plants and if I inspire someone to eat and cook well…. that is good!
"Epilepsy, autistic spectrum, gluten/casein reactivity, Tuberous Sclerosis: My son has epilepsy, developmental delay, behaviour problems and autistic tendencies just to name a few that are involved with his genetic disorder.
In 2009 I had read a few stories about how gluten can play havoc with the body, brain and behaviour. A friend passed Jan’s phone number with high recommendations and I have never looked back. My son’s behaviour changed within 2 weeks of Jan changing his diet and adding a few natural therapy medicines. It also helped with his seizure management too. Jan’s passion and extensive knowledge with the brain and body is truly amazing." - Hayley
"Dear Jan, I can’t thank you enough for your recommendations to help improve my well-being. For nearly a year I had been dealing with weariness and lack of motivation. Finally matters were brought to a head when I had “such a “black day” like I had never experienced before….. It was a wake-up call to see you and work out if I had an imbalance in my system. ….you evaluated this and half way through my taking your supplements I realised they were having such an impact on my wellbeing I hadn’t felt this good for ages.
Tiredness disappeared and my motivation returned. It has been extremely pleasing to me that my problems have been overcome by natural therapy as I was worried my “black day” would mean I would need dispensed medication. Again thank you soooooo much for your wise consultation." - Judy.
"Infertility Thank you for your help…. our little man has filled our hearts with love and our days with joy. Forever grateful." - Tara
