What is Meditation?

There are many different styles and techniques of meditation (including mantra, chakra, mindfulness, guided and Zen - to name a few) however they all have certain similarities. Each style of meditation implements different methods to obtain a unified state of clarity - insight - relaxation - concentration – mindfulness.

During meditation, our brainwaves shift through different stages, as described below:

Alpha

Meditation creates calming changes to the autonomic nervous system (responsible for the control of bodily functions which are not consciously directed, for instance breathing, heartbeat and digestive processes).

Gamma

These waves are representative of intent and focus. Meditation increases gamma waves particularly in the left prefrontal cortex of the brain (which decreases feelings associated with symptoms of anxiety and fear, while increasing our positive emotions).

Theta

It is believed that meditation can assist us to open our third eye (also known as the ajna or pineal gland) through which we may gain enlightenment and wisdom through vibrations. Theta brainwaves create a deep sense of relaxation, as well as enabling problem solving and memorizing abilities. In this manner, theta brainwaves also nurture our creativity.

Delta

With meditation, the delta waves can assist us to access our unconscious mind which we experience during deep sleep.

What are the Benefits of Meditation?

While there are many benefits to practicing regular Meditation, below is a list of the most commonly recognized:

  • Decreases anxiety, worry and impulses

  • Reduces stress, fear, loneliness and depression

  • Increases self-acceptance

  • Enhances optimism, awareness and relaxation

  • Helps to prevent addictive behaviours

  • Develops positive social interactions

  • Improves mental focus and clarity

  • Increases memory and recall

  • Improves cognitive function and decision making

  • Boosts immunity and energy levels

  • Normalizes heart rate and breathing

  • Reduces inflammation within the body

By incorporating a regular meditation routine, we allow ourselves to quieten our thoughts and become more present in the now. From this view point, we can begin to increase our self-awareness to encompass our beliefs and behaviours, which also promotes a clear sense of belonging, meaning and understanding within each area of our lives.
