Art Therapy

Art Therapy is for anyone who would benefit from expressing the inexpressible, managing stress and challenges, gaining a deeper send of self and facilitating recovery.

NO ART EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED OR NEEDED

We provide a safe, supported environment to help you:

  • Tap into experiences and feelings not easily expressed in words
  • Relax and de-stress
  • Develop self-awareness and self-esteem
  • Work on social skills
  • Manage behaviours and/or symptoms
  • Solve problems by looking with a different perspective
  • Gain a deeper sense of who you are.

You don’t need to be creative to reap the benefits.

What to expect?

Art therapy uses the creative process of art as a safe way to represent your inner experiences, develop awareness and support personal change. Using painting, drawing or clay work, you will be guided by an art therapist to help you understand underlying messages communicated through your art to aid in the healing process.

Along with your hands on activity, the art therapist may use relaxation and visualisation techniques and guided imagery in the therapy session.  The session is designed to help you process challenges in your life  and speed up your recovery process. Not all of art mediums would be used in one or even any session nor would they be suitable for everyone.

Art therapy is also a great tool to help you relax, reduce tension and gain a deeper sense of who you are.  Think colouring in with an edge!! The professional art therapist can help you interpret the feelings that pour into your design, and help you work through and resolve problems.

Guided drawing and Clay Field are two approaches that we use in our art therapy.

Clayfield Therapy

Clay Field Therapy is a deeply therapeutic technique widely used throughout Europe and now in Australia. It is a touch therapy that enables you to tap into deep, often buried memories and bring about healing. The focus is on encouraging  the growth of inner awareness and solutions through moving the clay, rather than dealing with specific problems.

The Clay Field involves a flat rectangular wooden box filled with smooth clay. This simple setting offers a symbolic “world” for the hands to explore.

Touch is one of the fundamental human experiences. Love, safety and secure attachment are experienced through touch. So too are violence and abuse and trauma through accidents and medical procedures. It is not surprising that many traumatic memories involve touch.

The use of the hands as a tool of perception is known as haptic perception. When hands touch clay, every movement of the hands provides instant feedback to the brain. Attachment patterns, developmental setbacks and traumatic events are evoked.  In a safe and supportive setting, the hands of clients will find their way through emotions such as fear and restriction and into a place of soothing and possibility.  The focus is not on the story but in finding a response to the world.

What if offers?

  • Development of identity and self-worth
  • Meeting developmental milestones
  • Encouraging self-soothing
  • Social and relational competence
  • Balancing out behavioural problems and obstacles
  • Resolving historical challenges

Guided Drawing

Guided drawing is a means to enable you to listen to your inner guidance, to what your body needs to restore balance, health and confidence in yourself.

It is a bilateral drawing approach (you are using two hands) that allows you to focus attention on your body sensations in the present moment such as tension or pain held in the body rather than being drawn into traumatic past events or future fear-based expectations. Making marks or gestures on paper with both hands communicates the body’s sense of distress, and then shifts attention from the distressing sensations in the body to an action and empowered focus.  This shift provides the possibility of resolving even the deepest, long held memories of trauma.

The drawing does not use imagery but the direct expression of what you feel at that moment through rhythmic, repetitive movements on the paper.

What to expect?

You draw with eyes closed and both hands on large sheets of paper.  No former art experience or creativity required!  All you need is an openness to your thoughts and senses and trust in the process.

The drawing does not use imagery but the direct expression of what you feel at that moment through rhythmic, repetitive movements on the paper.

What it offers?

Without words, a story or imagery, you have the opportunity to express past events and clear inner blocks, and repair and transform your life.

A client was experiencing muscle tension in her shoulders. Through Guided Drawing she drew the tension as it felt, with simple scribble movements and tight up and down strokes applied with lots of pressure.

To focus on, track and then express body sensations can bring relief in the now. Clients at this point can begin to notice what they really want or need in order to find relief.
