What is Homoeopathy and how does it work?
Homoeopathy recognises that all symptoms of ill health are signs of disharmony within the whole person and that it is the person who needs treatment, not the disease. Homoeopathic remedies work by stimulating the body’s own defence mechanism (healing power).
This power is very great and many complaints heal themselves unaided, but when the healing process is faulty, blocked or slow, then the homoeopathic remedy acts to stimulate the curative powers of the body and does so in either acute or chronic conditions.
Homoeopathic remedies very rarely cause side effects and you cannot become addicted to them. This is because only a very minute amount of the active ingredient is used in a specially prepared natural form. This remedy is always tailor made for your needs.
Homoeopathy is based on a natural law called the LAW OF SIMILARS which states that: “What a substance can cause, it can also cure”. In 500BC Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, knew of this law, but it has only been in the last 200 years that we have learned how to apply it. Samuel Hahnemann, the German physician, introduced a precise and systematic method of testing called ‘proving’.
This method involves giving medicinal substances(in high concentrations) to healthy human beings (not the sick or research animals) and finding out what symptoms they cause. When we know what a substance can cause (in a healthy person), we then also know what it can cure in a minute homoeopathic dose (in a sick person).
What can I expect to happen?
After taking your remedy you should notice some changes. Most often you will experience a period of exceptional well being, less tiredness and more energy, optimism and a sense of ‘joy of life’. These are signs that the remedy is doing its job.
However it occasionally happens that your symptoms appear worse for a short time, although you actually feel better in yourself. This is the remedy taking effect (It is called aggravation) and you should feel the beginnings of recovery in a couple of days.
If you develop a cold or a rash or some form of discharge, this will probably be the remedy having a ‘spring cleaning’ effect on the body. These symptoms will pass; they must not be treated as they are part of the healing process.
How quickly will I be healed?
This depends very much on what sort of illness you have and how long you have had it. A very slow developing chronic complaint such as a stomach ulcer will take some time to be fully healed, but other acute complaints eg. headache can get better very quickly.
Complicated cases are cured from the inside of the body, gradually working outward. This means that superficial outer symptoms, such as skin disorders are often the last to go. BE PATIENT, it is much better for you to be cured of both the cause of your illness and its symptoms, rather than merely relieve the symptoms.
